i remember the words of a honda sales man after making the deal with me ...i asked him about his job.....he replied " well most of the time i'm on both sides of the fence"........it sounded amusing at the time......but it must get depressing though

Does anyone know what is required to become a car salesman? I think it might be quite interesting but I don't really know anything about it. Where would I start? Can you just go straight into selling Porsches or do you have to start a bit lower down?

Any advice appreciated

Its a lot of hard work and a lot of hours! Once you get over that you can make a few quid from it. I started off selling a quite few years back, then up until I left the Industry last year I left at Sales/General Manager ranking. Had covered most of the different positions, but probably earnt more money as a Salesman and had less aggro and paperwork.

If your focused right and treat customers with the respect they deserve (even though some can be right pains) you'll do well. The only downfalls I had was lack of information via the manufacturer...most of the times magazines knew what was happening before I did. As long as your truthful you'll get respected...Its very easy to fob someone off with anything to get rid of them

Being able to openly lie is a good start.

How do you go about applying? Just send out a load of letters?

Fatherpierre - Is that really the case do you think?

Speaking from experience its either gonna be hell and you'll make about 3 grand a year or it'll be one of the best experiences of your life, you'll meet and work with top people, you get loadsa freebies and you'll make upwards of 40k

Trouble is trying to get your foot in the door - I only got into motorbike sales via a mate of a mate blah blah blah - may be worth hitting loadsa dealerships wth your CV and pestering for a chance

Best of luck

Put your CV together and spread it about a bit, but dont expect miracles from some of the Prestige Marques Franchises.

The basics are very low starting from approx £7-12k on average.

There are some Agencies on the net that deal wholly with the motor trade, but like anything make sure there not throwing you in for their numbers game.

I have also thought of doing the same thing (work in IT at the mo for a crap company for 12.5K!!!! so can't do allot worse).

Had word with mate of my dads who use to be car salesman but his words were "don't bother".

Guess everyone has there own opinion. I was also thinking how I would start off as wouldn't have a clue about selling cars, been working in IT for last 7 years since leaving school.

Good luck in whatever you end up doing tho

I tried to be honest and offer frank and relavent advice to my customers when I was selling cars. At the end of the day they all ran off and bought cars off the best liars, leaving me sat there earning nowt. So, rather than sat there earning nowt, I bogged off and got a better job.

If you have no/low moral standards, the ability to lie with a straight face, and be able to sleep after stitching people up with ludicrous finance deals, then you'll go far my boy, otherwise give it up as a bad job.

Reffro,

I think you have brilliant described what it takes to become a car salesman and it would also appear that having any knowledge of the product you are selling isn't required.

I did it when I 1st started working for Vauxhall.

I was in a "dealership placement scheme" as I had to know how everything works

Did it for 6 months in the end

It was bloody hard work, it takes time to be good at it, you work long hours but the pay if you are good can be very good for a relatively unskilled job (qualifications wise i mean)

I wouldnt go back because of the hours tho!. Im quite hppy being a monday to friday'r

Most of the time its not the product you are trying to sell as most people have an idea in this day and age what they would like & how much they would pay for it, its more selling yourself to come across as "not the stereotypical car salesman" & building the trust

Simple as that really
