You can do it online with a standard mobile....

www.fleetonline.net

It's pretty accurate (though not to gps style accuracy), have tried it with my phone. It only works for phones on O2 and voda at the moment.

When you add a phone to the list to track, it sends a txt to the phone asking for authorisation to be tracked. Replying with the correct code gives it the ok.

John.

Edited to add a bit.

Anyone got any info on this I just heard about it on the radio on the way home. They are suggesting them for parests to give to their kids so they know where they are. I was thinking of getting one and putting it discreetly in the car.

I heard about that the other week. Apparently, you have to enable them by phoning a number with the mobile first. Then you can call the network from any other phone, and ask them to tell you where the phone is.
Anyone got a partner they suspect of cheating on them?
Any bosses want to really know where their mobile staff are?
You could easily buy your partner, employee a new phone, enable it yourself first, give it to them, and then sit back and find out where they are going.
Very trick bit of kit, and have been in phones for quite a while now, just that it is only now being enabled.
Also, very good if you are lost, you can phone them and ask them to tell you where YOU are!

As I drive a HGV for a living I tend to listen to the Radio quite a lot. May be a year or two ago I heard a conversation on this subject (a missing child involved) it was said a firm in the USA can pin point any Mobile Phone to within a few yards. This was denied by Politicans. But the argument proved to be fact. just think if it is true all the children that have gone missing was for nothing.

Hello

You have been able to do this for many years, certianly to within 30 or 40 meters. Maybe the technology has improved or (more likely) the number of cells increased so it is easier to triangulate your position.

Cool

2 technologies here...

1) The one reported - The caller calls the network provider, who (for a fee) identifies the cell that the target phone is currently in, together with signal strength & surrounding cell's strength, thus being able to give a position within 50m (ish). Cost per poll is 20p with an annual/monthly charge

2) The US company (website/name forgotten) have produced a "secure" watch (cut hand off to remove watch ) that is a GPS/SMS/GSM device (simillar to RAC TrackStar) which can be Geo-Fenced & otherwise interogated for position down to 10m anywhere within GSM coverage.

Both techs have their limitations & are expensive to run if you need to know regular positional updates but do the job requested.

My mates Nokia from the early 90's displays the mast number that the signal is coming from. Easy to fine tune this a bit.

nowt new about this technology. phone companies can use triangulation and determine where your phone is, based on your cell. often used by the police in the case of missing persons and stuff i believe...

Shocker

Correct, but you have to know the locations of all the cells

& you have to get the info from your phone back to the office...

Very simple way to defeat this.

Turn the thing off if you don't want someone to know where you are!

How do you think the "where's my nearest" cashpoint / petrol station etc options work?

Sure it's a matter of time before there's a gps in the phone - more accurate, and easier.

- Mark.
