It's a great place. Loads of poverty though.
Try and go to the south of the island. Too many street vendors hassling you all the time. Watch out for the sea urchins as they really hurt when you step on them so buy some old shoes to swim in.
The diving is great if you like that.
The people are really friendly and always happy to chat.
Take a trip to Seona island as its absolutley fantastic. Stopping about 3 miles out at sea to get out of the boat and walk along a sandbank while drinking rum.
150% proof Rum (Ron) is about £3 a bottle and very potent. You can watch it evaporating.
Motorbike and pushbike hire is really cheap and a good way to get about.
Visit the sugar and tobacco plantations and go on a safari as well as they are great fun.
I highly reccommend it. A great holiday and a wonderful country but stay out of the shanty towns.
Get a good guide and get them to take you into the outlying villages to see a real VooDoo ceremony and not the tacky sh1te that they put on for the tourists.
Some great stuff to by like paintings and carvings.
Get a local kid to shin up a coconut tree for you and then hack the top off it for a drink for a couple of dollars.
Mail me if I can help anymore.

I went there over 10 years ago to Bavaro Beach Resort All/inc, was very nice then, golf course, lots of food, lovely sand and sea. Thoroughly enjoyed it. A bloke i work with went last year and he said he had a great time too.
I would deffo go again.

Budget Caribbean. Which means you get the weather, but in a 3rd world country. Many people go down with stomach upsets there, as i did, so try and stick to mineral water if possible. But otherwise, a decent enough place if you're under no illusions as to what to expect.
