Question

It appears that while I've been away for Christmas, my fish have given birth. I *think* that they are baby guppies, from the little that I can see them...

Is there anything I can do to protect them from the other fish in the tank, like the Mollies and other guppies until they get a bit bigger? They are currently about 7mm long? There are plenty of plants in which they can hide, but I was wondering if there is anything else that I can do...?

How old would these be at this length?

Mice

You could try a breeding tank, thats sits inside the main tank

and this will 'protect' the baby fish until they are big enough to survive with the rest

Do the baby fish get in there through tiny slits or something as catching them would be a smidge difficult, I feel.

I had that with my tropical fish, tried the floating breeding tank, none survived

Next time it happened I let nature take its course, and I had some that survived.

What's the average birth count? I can see about 4/5 in the tank, so obviously some have been "got". Given the size of my Plecostomus, it's a good job it's vegetarian as he could quite easily snort them!

How big do they have to get before they are "safe"...? I have Tetras in there too, which aren't a whole lot bigger than the babies, it has to be said...

Not too sure really

the idea behind the breeding tank, is that the slits are too small to let the fish in or out, but big enough for the water to circulate

My dad had a lot of success with his

and my catfish ate all my fish, but I should have known better

Question

Your catfish ate them? Thought they were vegetarian?

Not totally sure if I could catch the little ones, in all honesty...could give it a go, though...

Do they eat "normal" fish food?

Sorry for all the questions.

AFAIK they will/should eat normal fish food, as long as it isnt pellets

erm my Catfish is a Blue Channel Coldwater one, and is evil, he is definatly not vegetarian

Apparently shortly after I bought it, they were banned, i think for the reason that they are aggressive and NOT vegetarian

I got all my other fish in a pond now

My dad has only just restocked his tank, after many years of Marine Tropical, sadly they all died eventually, but all of old age

He has about 10 Neon Tetras, and has just bought 5 SIlver Sharks

the tank is 5'x2'x2' takes a lot of work tho

I just have the Catfish now, in a 32" tank, and he is about 12-13 inches now and would grow to over 3 foot in the right environment

I got about 6 fish in the Pond, as 4 recently died when the weather turned

I inherited the pond & contents, and the previous owner of the house, didnt look after it, and when I moved in, I thought it was pea soup

Hey Bravo. I've only got a small tank here at the moment, as my big tank is being used by 4 cold water fish at home in Bedfordshire. My boss is giving away some of his tanks, though, so am looking to upgrade with those.

I've got mainly guppies in mine - dragonhead, lionhead and female blues, mollies, neon tetras, corydoras, the plec (which is getting huge!) and female siamese fighting fish. I really wanted a male one, but can't with the guppies...

Buy a load of natural and thick plants to go in the tank and the guppies will hide in there, and be quite safe.

Hi Sparky - that's what I've done. I couldn't find a spawning mat or java moss, but I bought 12 or so other plants and put them in there.

As a quick fix you could cut the top off a 2litre pop bottle(wash it obviously),thread a straightened coathanger through it and balance it on the glass with the bottle in the tank.Take a line off your air pump for the litlle fishies to breathe and you've got a self contained nursery.
I tried the little breeding tanks and the baby fish seemed to get through the holes.Ideally you need a spare tank.

We found the net type breeding tanks work reasonably and caught babies from main tank with small net. Number of babies born can be staggering - we counted at least 40 plus Mollies once. In the end we had to get another tank just for babies. And now these have started getting preggers.........

Depending on what your tank is like heavy planting gives good cover for the little guys to hide in. Have a look at www.java-plants.com They do a range of plants that are left overs from the previous weeks sales and for about 8 quid you get absolutely shed loads. They all come seperately packed and in superb condition.

My tank is about 32 by 18 by 24 inch and its nearly impossible to get them all in. I haven't quite managed to get them all to survive but for 8 quid a couple of times a year you can't go wrong.

Jase - that is far too hard to pronounce.

This is my tank at the moment :

Good idea about the bottle - I'll try that one, if I can catch the babies!

What camera did you take that with, Karlos? My one can't cope with the fishes' movements.

Although the picture I posted is with flash, so knocks out the tank light.

The camera I used is a Minolta S304. I've had some really good piccies come out with it. Trying to photo moving fish is a different matter, I tended to just take photo's of the bottom feeders as they do stay still long enough to focus on them. Unlike any of the other ba$tard things!!!

Sorry to hijack but this seems a good time to ask if one of you guys/gals can tell a silver surfer how to post piccies as above. I have had a look at edit but this didn't get me anywhere. I have a digital camera, a computer and about 3 grey cells so please be gentle. Thanks in advance. David.
