reading in the paper about a miner trapped by the forearm.
had to cut it off below the elbow, then the climber in america.

You wouldn't need to "hack at the bone" Si.
Once you had sliced the flesh and cartelidge (sp?) (which you said you were "OK"` with) the arm would just fall off
not sure I could do it mind.

I would cut it off...but quickly; leave the crush injury for a few hours and you're doomed anyhow.
