Contacted my local council the other day to see when a road ringing Cardiff would be completed. It should have been done in 1997 but was stopped when Prescott announced his spending plan for roads.
Transport guy told me a shortfall in Gov funding still left then short of 37m£. However they asre still going to go ahead with the road by initiating a private/public partnership. Now theres a surprise I thought.
When I preesed him further he admitted that the funding to pay for the road would be either a toll at the entry exit ponts or by a local tax at the workplace whatever that means.
So for all the tosh you read looks like these roads are here to stay.
Chip.

Ive got no problems with toll roads, if they are going to get built quicker.
Tolls should be paid until the roads been paid for and then they should be handed over to local/central government

No Chip, we pay road taxes to build 5* hostels for Kosovan heroin addict lesbian single mother reformed terrorists.
Ooh, we do pay for some roads. But they're in Spain.

Yes Road Tolls are OK if they remove road Tax and fuel duty and insurance tax on motor vehicles lowered VAT on Petrol to the same as on red diesel (I drive for work but aren't a farmer why should i be punished?) and then it would be fairer otherwise build the roads out of the money they already take!

Agree entirely, but what happens in reality is that the government/private enterprise takes AGES to pay off the debt, including a high rate of interest, then refuses to scrap the toll, on the grounds that it needs the money for upkeep of the road: witness, the Dartford crossing. The blasted thing has paid for itself, and they won't scrap the toll as they need that much again to maintain it
