i do this for a living....and i know a few others on here do too.
You can get a cheap starter pack for a few hundred notes nowadays....then just run it through a stereo to hear it..
This is the cheapest route- and if you are just testing the water to see if you like it then probably the best method- other than borrowing a friends turntables.
If you learn on cheap/poor turntables, if and when you progress to better ones- like technics, then its a hell of a lot easier...
direct drive turntables better than belt drive for speed stability etc..but again, if you are just starting out, then its not hugely important.
Do you have any friends with a set you could have a go on? Just to see if you like it? It may be hard at first- but soon enough will *click* (there was a seperate post a few days back about mixing etc with some good advice in).
Lots of good books on starting out and starter packs are availabe too.ve taught some people to mix before-some people can get it, others never do.
the equipment doesnt cost a hell of a lot....unfortunately records do.....you dont wanna know my weekly spend on vinyl and cds
Give it a go- i did once (i started out with one turntable and one non pitch adjust cd player and learnt to beatmatch that way), and never looked back.

No idea how to do clicky links- sorry.
can range from this:
Starter kit
http://www.htfr.com/more-info/?catno=MR31030
to this
More advanced/depper pocket sort of kit
http://www.htfr.com/more-info/?catno=MR74223
to this:
professional standard-same headphones i use and technics 1210s industry standard turntables-say no more
http://www.htfr.com/more-info/?catno=MR66928
(just using this site as an example-by no means a definitive list of packages etc)http://www.htfr.com/products/category/?id=djpackage
Or look on ebay, cash convertors etc etc- young wannabe djs are spoilt for choice nowadays with cheap packages available
if you can afford it go for some direct drive turntables-better start/stop time, more stable pitch etc. But as i said, if you are learning, then its not hugely important.
Be warned- its not easy at first.... Will be a totally new concept having to listen for two things and adjust accordingly...some get it easily, some dont.
Hope that helps
