Depends on the car you're looking to drive, your NCB status and your locale.

If the insurance is too expensive, get a cheaper runabout until you build up your NCB.

You're more likely to get off with a smaller penalty if you get caught without insurance than if you get caught speeding...

Insurance companies do take the whatsit. They know they have a captive market and they're all as bad as each other. And for the amount of time it takes for them to sort out a claim if you are involved in an accident, especially if it's not your fault, you may as well not bother having insurance at all.

A lorry drove into the back of my car whilst I was stationary in traffic in December 2001. There were no witnesses. In September 2002 my insurance company finally passed the case to their solicitors. I am still waiting for something to happen. Of course, it's not really in the interests of the insurers to sort out claims efficiently, because whilst it is outstanding they get increased premiums from both parties, whether at fault or not.

It's a bloody disgusting situation and should be much better regulated.

I PAY A GRAND, which I still consider a lot given the risk and age and 10yrs NCB. One quote was £1800 from Privilige - so just keep shopping around then! Try Frizzel.

A bonus accelerator is a ten month policy which gives you a full year's no claims.

Bonus accelerator is usually a 10 month policy. The premium is for 10 months insurance but you get a year's NCD at the end of that time, so you build up NCD faster. At least, that's the theory.

Oh, and I'd never advocate anyone go without insurance, but I can see why people are increasingly disillusioned by the behaviour of the insurance companies.

Try getting quotes with someone else as a named driver, (preferably someone older and without any recent claims). That can sometimes bring the cost down a bit. It works in my case, which is why my housemate is insured to drive my car.

Strictly this is still illegal TK.

If you are not the main driver than you are breaking the law. A girl smacked into the back of me while driving on her boyfriends insurance (big BMW Alpina), she (after speaking to her BF) then decided to say that it was my fault by lying about the incident.

I told her if that was the case then I would 'have' to let her insurance company know that as she worked at the same firm as myself, that I and loads of other people have seen her drive and park 'her' car at work every morning for years, all on her BF's insurance.

The car was also registered at her BF's fathers house out in the stix when it was actually parked outside her house in the city centre every night. A good few photos and a word in her BF's shell like soon changed both their minds.

Eh? Illegal? I'm not suggesting having the policy in someone else's name. Get the policy in your own name and add someone else as a named driver, like I said. In my case adding my housemate brought the premium down. I am the main driver and the insurance is in my name, he is just listed as also insured to drive the car. It made quite a significant difference to the cost as I recall.

Not that I dont believe you TK, but Ive never heard of that one before. Im sure insurance companies charge by the 'greatest' risk i.e. youngest, less expreienced, most dangerous, DD etc.

If I was a feckless 18 YO boy band member and I wanted to insure a sports car in my own name then I cant see how by putting my father of grampa (and especially not my flat m8) on the policy is going to 'fool' the insurance company into saying 'yeah, have it £100 cheaper son, we know its not you thats going to be driving it like an 18 YO boy racer 24/7 anyway'.

Could you give us some more detail regarding how you have managed this?

In fact I was 'charged' an extra 'administration' fee of £50 to get my dad on my policy, and he is as safe as it comes with over 40 years no claims

They're right - it does work. The lady I brought our Scoob from added her boyfriend to the quote, as he was a "Company Director" it took £350 off the quote bringing it to £950 rather than over £1000 IIRC

Don't know why it works like that though

Jye- Yup im still the main driver. Added my mum as additional driver and if i also add my bf (which i won't) but if i did then it goes right down in price! Saves at least £300!!

Not sure how they regulate it though, in theory you could make up a person and they wouldn't know, they don't ask for specific details really.

By the way weapon69, you're quite welcome to the tip. I only found out by accident that it reduced the quote in my case and I thought it was worth a try for you.

Jye, often insurers will charge an administration fee to add drivers once the policy is running, but they'll usually let you add extra drivers free when you take out the policy, or at renewal time, (though sometimes you need to make a fuss to get it done free at renewal). I did it when I took my policy out and it significantly lowered the quote.

I don't know how it works either, but it does, so I am not complaining.
