what sort of music do you want to mix?
I would recommend, if it is house or trance, to go out and by the same vinyl twice.
Put the same mix of the track on both decs, and set the speed to the middle.
Let one play, and try to bring the other in. You wont need to adjust the speed, as it is the same song set at the same speed.
Practice and practive until you can mix it in, and no-one notices. Then try adjusting the speed, and so fourth - once you have learnt how to listen to the beats etc, then try bring in another track.
I am not sure what other people do, but I never use the fader, as some clubs you go to that part on the mixer is usually broken. So try and use the channel a and b, to slowly rise b up, and just before the top, bring down a a bit, and push b up to the top - not too much though. Depends on your style, best way is to mix in, I find anyway, slowly - most mixes I do are about 1minute+ if the song is right of course!
One day it will just "click" and you will know what to listen for

Beat matching is hard at first-working out which tune is faster or slower, let alone adjusting the speed the right amount.
One day it will suddenly make sense and you will find it easier...
It did to me...now i make a living from it.

(p.s- i dont generally use the x fader either-except for r,n,b/garage/drum'n'bass)
Advice in post above is top stuff-give it a go.
I learnt to pitch using one turntable and one cd player(non pitch adjustable!) and having a copy of the same tune on 12" and cd....using a similar method to above.
As said, it will suddenly 'click'
Thats if you referring to 'normal' mixing...
if you are talking about turnablism in the sense of beat juggling, cutting etc like they do at the dmc mixing championships.....then give me some tips too- cos im nowhere near as good as those guys!

And some great advice above too.I'd also recommend getting hold of some DVD/Videos that come with vinyl, they can be great for tuning the finer skills that make a DJ really stand out, like scratching.
Some Butterrugs come in handy too.
thanks guy for the advice. i mainly listen to Trance but i like a bit of Funky house as well. beat mixing just doesnt click with me at all. but when i get my decks off my mate at the end of the week, i'll lock myself away for a few hours and see what happens
Madjay, its gonna take more than a few hours mate, try a few years.
Christian is right though, one day it will click and then everything will become clear. Ive been doing it since i was about 17-18, and now im 24 and still dont know half of it. Took 2 years out and im now back on the scene practicing again. Its all about trying new things to be original. Just keep practicing. BTW the faster the music (ie BPM = Beats Per minute) the easier it is to mix. Personally i would forget about beat juggling at present and stuff like that as thats for the more advanced. Besides its sounds crap unless you are really really good at it like DJ Craze (DMC mixing Champ). Good luck and remember the key word.
