Default Record Players/Turntables

My parents have recently cleared out their attic and found a load of my old records in boxes - they are mainly old LP's and 12" singles (with the odd 7" single - see comment below) but having looked through them, and having tried to find some of them on CD (unsuccessfully!), I'm wondering whether I should try and locate a turntable to connect to my midi system.

Having looked on eBay, there seems to be a few turntables there, which have a phono output lead (which looks like an RCA cable).

Question - will a turntable connect to my midi system? It has a tape deck, CD player and radio, but it does have an AUX button, and at the back, there are RCA connectors entitled RCA IN.

Help please for an ignoramous!

If anyone fancies a giggle, one of the 7" singles was Buck's Fizz's 'One Of Those Nights' which was autographed by Jay Aston!!! She used to live round the corner from me in Purley and I went round her house (aged 11!). How sad......

if it has a phono/rca in, it should be fine. Slim chance you may need a phono-->line converter, but you can pick them up for under £15.
Edit- in fact- some old turntable add ons probably has built in riaa preamps enabling them to be plugged into any aux....

If you just want an old midi system turntable (with auto return ) you can pick them up for (literally) pennies- hell you could even pick up an old system for peanuts too. Just make sure the stylus is not buggered- or it may destroy the records.
I cant recommend one of those sadly, as i only use pro turntables/stylus and associated gubbins for work and know not a lot about home stuff.
I can recommend technics Sl1200/1210 with ortofons highly....but they may be a little expensive and over the top for your needs !!!

Thanks for that - I'll investigate the back of my system tonight just to set if it refers to phono - I may even check the serial numbers and see if I can find any details on the net.

IIRC you can only connect a turntable to a stereo system EASILY if it has an input labelled "phono".

This is because the output of even a high uoutput ceramic cartridge, (not the best type by any means!!), is WAY below what the other inputs are set at, so if yiou can hear it at all, it'll need to be well turned up and will still be faint.

However, all is not lost. A decent Hifi shop will sell you a phono preamp, alittle gizmo you plug the turntable into, and then plug it in turn into the aux bit of your Hifi. I think QED do one for a few quid, certainly not dear!

Correct, you need a phono stage to connect the turntable as all your inputs on your midi system are at line level (2V), as Alcazar said, the output of a cartridge is much lower than that.

have a look at the project debut, fantastic turntable! i used to sell pallet loads of these to people with mini/midi sytems wanting to add a deck. can be bought with a phono stage built in too. i went to the factory about 5 years ago and was amazed at how well made they are for the price! well worth a look

i've had a Technics SL200 turntable for quite a while and had to buy a phono pre-amp to connect the turntable to the home theatre AVR.

Long term plan is to link the turntable to the computer and burn the LP's to CD or DVD via the computer's CD/DVD writer.

Apparently there's sofware available that can be used to filter the recording, taking out scratches and other unwanted noises on the LP.

Then I can listen to Pretty Things / Hawkwind / Barclay James Harvest in my car

Rock on !!!

Get the Pro-ject Debut for £120 or the Pro-ject Debut Phono £160. Remember in addition to the step up to line level input the phono stage has to provide RIAA equalisation. So you do require a proper phono stage. The Pro-ject turnable with the built in phono stage seems a good option.

I was only thinking of a cheap turntable, 2nd hand on eBay or whatever! I'm not convinced that the type of music I would be (occasionally) listening to would warrant spending much money.

Having now looked at the back of the system, there's definitely no 'phono' sockets, so I'll have to look towards the gadget Alcazar recommends.

Thanks.

I recently purchased for £50 a new turntable / radio system complete, with speakers and tuner inbuilt. They were advertised in newspapers and magazines its made by a company called DERRENS in China, its neat and tidy and in a wooden box about 2 ft square. Sorry no addresses or telephone numbers on it or in the paperwork anywhere.

Argos do turntables from £49.99

you can pick up a Similar system off Ebay for around 50 quid

A NOTE

these are Pioneer at their best not their modern shiat that goes bang after six months of full volume.

As above 14 years old and still cranks it out

Question

IPKIS: when you turn it on, does a saturn V land in the back yard?

Seriously, WHAT ARE all the bits? Given that MD/CDRW wasn't around then, I'm intrigued.

LoL the minidisc player is a later addition to it thru its optical DAT input/output.
The rest is one system
6CD changer
Cassette deck
Graphic EQ
amp with cd direct via optical link
tuner
turntable
ignore the lighter coloured speakers next to it they are hooked to my home cinema system

I think the older stuff seems to take more abuse.

But for the time period having optical in/outs is rare

plus the bonus part is it was so well matched when it was built you can crank it up to full volume and leave it there for hours...
I know 100 Watts per channel isn't earth shattering but back then it was considered very loud

No distortion whatsoever

Pioneer need to stop trying to make smaller and smaller rubbish that sounds crap and go back to building quality like they used to.

Wink

My stuff is early 90's too, Linn turntable (Axis, not the expensive one!), Technics pre/power amp, with on board DACs, Technics top end CD, Sony tuner, Sony cassette and Sony minidisc.

It plays through apair of Mission Argonauts, and still sound good, although is outclassed by esoteric stuff now........I nearly bought a £3500 system from Cyrus, now that WAS class. And I'd LOVE some Proac Tablette speakers, only £1200!

Did you all buy your kit when you were at university, like I did? I also have a load of early 90s kit:
Marantz CD52 CD player
Dual CS505-4 turntable
Sony ST-S311 tuner
AIWA R505 tape deck
Denon PMA-350 amp
Pair of Tannoy 605 loudspeakers
