Anyone been to Maui?

Yeah, I went there. We were staying in LA and I used up some BA miles for a couple of free flights - good place to use them as they are about £400 ea from LA...
Haleakala was a must - drove a hired Mustang sideways up this volcano and up through the clouds to a lunar landscape! Weird!
Get a chopper ride (Air Maui were good) and pre-book online for discounts - get it early on in the trip in case of postponements due to weather. Other than that it was a just another bit of USA with virtually zero Hawaiian/exotic feel. Was covered with corporate chain hotels that milk you for every penny - dont touch that phone! You do not need more than 5 daysm there. Everything costs +20% compared to the mainland too.
The greatest feeling was calling up a friend from a volcano in the middle of bloody nowehere in the middle of the Pacific!
D
Edit to answer your question! It's expensive to stay there - again I used up Marriott Rewards and stayed at a $400 a night Marriott Resort (Resort means redcoats and mimni golf...)free. I would have died to pay them that for a week! Go East to spend that sort of money - VFM!

I was there for two weeks. Working for a US company (Silicon Valley) at the time. Got a US friend to book it from the US. 2 weeks self catering in Maui including fliughts to/from San Fran and hire car was $1K each. Exchange rate about what it is now .... I was flown to from San Fran as I was on 'business'. The GF got as cheap flight. If you have friends/rellies in the US book it thru them. It is part of the US after all.
Brill holiday. And I'd probably go back .....
