not sure if this should be in computer related or not, mods, feel free to move if you wish, I'll not lynch ya!
Only seen this since I've been in Canada, just wondering if anyone else has seen this.
I get a new msn window poping up and it's spam message! I've had one to watch some lovely girl doing all kinds of naughty things, plus I've just had one talking about septic tanks!
I've not seen this type of spam before, any idea how I stop it? I am sure my system is setup so that I have to aprove new users that add me to thier msn list, so I should have to auth the person before thier msn shows up.
weird or what!

Are you being sharked?
~
Are these windows 'real' msn ones or pop up network messages that have been made to look like msn (i.e. title car changed etc.)?
Maybe the spammers are becoming more ingenious.

They are real msn windows. I should mention I'm on a Macintosh, so the ol messenger service spam thing don't effect me.
And it's not sharking, more's the pity!

Erm, Tools->Options, Pivacy tab, select "All Other Users", click block, hey presto only people on your contact list can message you, if someone else adds you to theirs you get prompted about it and asked to allow or not.

I have done the above and still get pop-up windows - they are text boxed - it says Messenger service at the top.
One of them which was very irritating kept saying - close this port by buying our software.
Gits.
Using the above option has not stopped them.
I have only had this since moving to XP.

Andrewza - this option does not exist in my version of MSN Messenger (I'm using the Maintosh version) It DID used to be in there but has buggered off in the latest version, typical!
Rannoch - Here's a cure for this little beastie!
Right click on 'my computer' and select 'manage'
In the Computer Managment screen that pops up click 'services and applications' click 'services' to display all the services.
Scroll down until you see 'messenger' right click on it and select properties. click 'stop' then change startup type to 'disabled' Click OK
Done!
Reason you saw it when going from whatever to XP is because XP is win 2000 based and has the messenger service whereas win 95 and 98 did not.
blooming annoying thing!

Rannoch - the "messenger" message you're getting is the internal messenger service belonging to the operating system - not MSN Messenger.
I won't go in to details. But the easiest way to get rid of it is to shut it down like one of the posts above says, or install a firewall like ZoneAlarm - which would provide additinal protection. ZoneAlarm is free - just search for it on the net.
