Break barrel(where you break the barrel to **** the gun) guns are noisy because of the spring and there's no way to silence them, they can also be less accurate because of minute fluctuations in barrel 'seating' on closing.Gas guns on the other hand can easily be silenced to be very quite and remain more accurate because of the fixed barrel. If you buy a rifle or pistol that exceeds the maximum allowable power you will be in serious trouble if caught as it is a proper firearms offence.
ps .177 pellets travel faster but pack less punch and are more affected by crosswinds, whereas.22 is the opposite.

Someone had a couple of rifles and pistols for sale on here a wek or so back, may be worth a search or trawl, good quality weapons IMHO.

Break barrel(where you break the barrel to **** the gun) guns are noisy because of the spring
This is generic to all spring powered guns. I would say with a break barrel that its more to do with the clunk as you break the barrel rather than the spring making any sound.
and there's no way to silence them
The sort of noise we are talking about here is miniscule. You would have to be pretty close to your quarry for it to have an adverse affect.
they can also be less accurate because of minute fluctuations in barrel 'seating' on closing
A bit of an old wives tale. Ive had several break barrels and they shoot just as well at 5 years old as they did when I first got them. A new seal isnt very expensive either. With a break barrel you can seat the pellet perfectly in the barrel whereas with an under/side lever you may have to rely on a tap system to feed the barrel (which can damage the pellet and restrict the types of ammo you can use).
Gas guns on the other hand can easily be silenced to be very quite and remain more accurate because of the fixed barrel
Im assuming you mean PCP (Pre Charged Pneumatics) which fire compressed air and not gas i.e. the same stuff divers fill their breathing tanks up with. These are a bit expensive for a first time shooter, once you take into acccount the charging kits.

How much do you want to spend? My advice would be to sign up for an account on http://www.airgunbbs.com and read up on the different air rifles available whilst talking to all the regulars. The worst thing to do is go and buy something that is totally unsuitable and waste a few hundred quid. I would buy a decent springer, then if you get into it you might want to upgrade to a PCP rifle and better scope.

A decent Weihrauch springer will cost you about £180 new (HW95K). A mediocre scope another £40-£50, scope mounts £20-£30, gunbag £20-£30, silencer £30, pellets £5, BASC membership (includes public liability shooting insurance) £35 per year. A decent PCP like an AirArms 410K would cost about £380 plus another £100 for a basic charging kit. Then a couple of quid every time you get the local diving shop to fill up your tank.

Hope that helps!

Simon.

I'd go for .22, others will argue for .177 - reasons above. Stopping power of pellet should be the same (12 ft/lb).

Not entirely sure about break-barrel being less accurate, true if it's a very old gun and worn. Also you can get fixed-barrel spring guns, like my HW77 (underlever).

Weirauch (HW) good overall make, Theoben also I believe.

Gas guns lighter and I think quieter, but might be 50% more expensive.

No idea on scopes. I got a 3-9x40 zoom, seems to do the job (I usually use on 6x magnification). Lasers too new for me

I have a Theoben Evolution in .22 and its a great little gun but maybe a little pricey if your not sure your going to use it all that much. That said I bought mine 2 months old off ebay with a Simmons WTC 3.5-10x50 WhiteTail Classic Scope (normally worth £209) and a Evo+Vortex Silencer for £435 - new it would cost around £620.

Oh and dont worry too much if your new gun is over 12ft/lbs from new - mine was 13.5 when I first got it. But after a few tins of crosman accupells its settled down to a legal 11.8

I reccommend a Weiraucht.

I've an HW97K underlever, superb German build quality, and lethally accurate and powerful, a real revelation compared to my old Webley.

I'm talking about the noise when fired which is far from miniscule and cannot be silenced.

I'm with P1 on this one,

Theoben is one of the best legal airguns available.

You could do a lot worse than buy the kit being advertised in the FOR SALE forum. Air Arms S310 - .177 10 shot with all charging kit for £350. Very tempted myself but I thinks its a right hand stock and Im a leftie. Dont listen to the only use .22 brigade - .177 should be fine for most things. It has a flatter trajectory so is more accurate at longer rangers. Oh and if you decide to take up FT (Field Target) shooting then you will need .177 and a lot of top shooters use AA PCP rifles.
