Red light cameras flashing on takeoff?
#1
I just raced a new M3 from the lights and we both pegged it on amber and the red light camera flashed me, why?
Is there some violation i'm not aware of?
Surely driving away from stand still on an amber is not illegal.
Anyone know if the photo will show what state the lights were in, i got a feeling i'm gonna get done for doing nothing wrong!

sounds like you jumped a red light.
at a drag strip its known as red lighting, taking off before green, its how they work out your RT [reaction time] 0.40 rt iirc is know as a perfect light any quicker & red

Wouldn't worry.
Surely the camera will show the amber light on at the same time as the red light.(about to change to green not red)
If you had jumped a light about to change to red the amber light would be on its own!
Perhaps then it would be a different kettle of fish

my worry is that my car went across the line with a red light on, regardless of the lights sequence or amber state.
Its a real technicality, i just hope i dont get done for it

yes, under normal circumstances when the lights had been green then I agree that you should stop and that its very dangerous to go over them.
However we had been sitting on red for like 2mins and then they went red/amber which unless you're some kind of super star you'll never get over the line before they go green, however I seem to have, i'm sure its covered by the same law and i'll quite rightly get a ticket but its a bit of a cop out really isnt it!

up to just under a ton yes, then his superior power brought him past! i've only got a uk turbo, none of this big jap turbo for me got a tek2 and decat though, was flying!
Seems my excellent take off will earn me 3 points, never thought about it before, i've always gone as soon as it went one amber, never have I dreamed i'd get over the line before green, perhaps I should hang back in future!
"RED AND AMBER also means 'Stop'. Do not pass through or start until GREEN shows", from Highway Code

Actually, what are the chances that he got a better takeoff than me and it was actually him who got flashed, oh well I can only wait and pray, if I dont get one then i'll sleep easy on the fact that the BMW driver will pay for beating me

Traffic light sequence:-
Green
Amber
Red
Red & Amber
Green
So its impossible for you to have pulled away when only amber was showing, so i suppose the photo will show the red, expect a ticket i reckon

In America they started the money making scam's ( To save a life of course) with the red light camera's so adjusted the sequence to increase prosecutons by chnaging the time from green to red to less so they catch you before you can stop and making red/amber to green slower to get you as your pull away.
Of course when this was compalined about it was defended by the if it saves one life it is worth all these fines being America somebody payed for some reserch and proved that accidents had in fact increased at the camera's as every body just hit the brakes or swerved all over the road to avoiod a ticket and then this person took the city councils to the courts and got the scheme quashed!!!!!!!!!
Shame we can't do the same for the Tax camera's on our roads.

The same happened to me when I happened to accelerate quickly from a set of lights while a bloke in a 205 GTI happened to be doing the same beside me. I thought I saw the camera flash but was unsure why. That was absolutely ages ago and I never heard anything so I wouldn't worry mate.
Edited to say that I did not set off as soon as the amber went on. It was just about to change to green when I set off but would probably have been on amber at the flash.

It's happened to me twice, No tickets recieved
It tends to happen if you've rolled over the wire before you stop. It then flashes as you take off. Happened to me once & the light was DEFINATELY green

the amount of times ive gone through a red its silly. If your going to fast and it is deemed dangerous to stop you carry on through, ive never had a ticket (touch wood), you may be lucky mate - lets be honest mugging + thieving > going through a red light, hopefully the police will understand.
best of luck

Not wanting to be the person putting a downer on,
What would have happened if a driver on the other set of lights had made an amber dash at speed to save sitting at the lights could have been messy, not mentioning traffic lights tend to be in more urban areas.
Not having a go as we all have our fun, just be aware of all the consequences
Cheers

middle of the night with a handful of other cars around mate, i always check before making a quick start, the impreza gets you into the path of crossing traffic too fast not to check! Hopefully the beemer will get the fine, he's obviously got more money (or more debt)

two days ago i came to set of these camered up lights near my work. i hate them they make me feel dead worried. anyway as i approached them they went amber so i slamed on and stopped with my front wheels just over the line. soon as i'd stopped i was looking at the camera. it never went off! but i find these things such a distraction to normal driving. when you approach them and they go amber i never know whether to stop or run them. where as on normal lights it's ok to run amber. they are one of the worst things on the road. and i have noticed alot of them arent stickered up so you cant see them!!!
I have also heard some of them are going to be equipped to measure your speed as well. Whether this is true or not i dont know. Shouldnt be such a big deal cos flying through a set of lights at say 50mph when your in a 30 is just daft.

AFAIK the only time you can get away with crossing on amber is when you arrive close to the line when it changes from green and to attempt to stop may cause an accident. In this case the road across you must also be clear. If you set off across the lights from stationary at amber, or amber/red as it should be then they can hold you guilty of jumping the lights.
I think I'll give Cheshire a miss now!

A green aspect means you should be prepared to slow and stop, should the lights change.
Unless you are impossibly close to the traffic lights (in which case you should be able to make it through an amber aspect without having to floor it), you should be able to slow and stop, easily.
Most traffic lights are in 30 or 40mph areas which makes stopping even easier!!
As for taking off on red & amber, the red light still means stop! Did you check for any pedesrians crossing before tear-arsing off into the distance??
