Jay,
I take it you mean on Manhattan?? Earlier this year I stayed at the Franklyn Hotel, which is on E87 near Lexington. Nice little hotel 58 rooms. They advertise it as room only, but in the moring they put out fruit, muffins and drinks. It worked out at about $100 per night (63 quid) for the room. Would recommend it as a base as it's near the Lexington line Subway. You can get anywhere from there as it runs through 42 St Subway.
If you look at www.travelnow.com this will give you an idea of the hotels/prices. I then phoned the hotel direct and booked it as it made it even cheaper.
Hope this helps a little.

The Roosevelt on Maddison Avenue & 45th Street. 2 blocks from Times Square.
We stayed there on March and it is a great hotel. Very friendly. 1 block north there is a deli called "The Metro" that has fantastic breakfasts, etc.
I would recommend "The Roosevelt" to anyone and will definately stay there again.
Look here
Roosevelt

Edited because my spelling is cr@p.......

Cheap is Raddisson just of Madison ave
I normally stay at the Benjemin as you get a choice of pillows
Also stayed at New York Palace - but now over £350 per night
UN hotel is good but don't stay there if USA alert is above yellow

Righa Royal (spelling?) is the best I've stayed at - but expensive.
Carlton on Madisson is cheap at moment (as it's being renovated)
Mariott on Lexington is good.
Just up the road on Lexington is The Metropolitan which is good value.
Near Wall Street is the Marriott Financial Centre (nice place, but expensive) and place is dead in the evening.
Prices in Manhattan fluctuate all over the place. Your best bet is to go to Lastminute.com and get a deal as close to you fly out as possible.

We've stayed here .. and would go back. It's cheap , convenient ( 2mins to times sq / rockerfeller plaza ) clean and handy for the subway.

Nope, Marriott Financial Centre is still there - it is two buildings away from the trade centre site. The top rooms (ie, above floor 16 I think it is) look down over another building on to the site of the WTC.
Good point - New Yorker is the worst hotel I've stayed in. You can stretch your arms out and touch opposite walls. The one time I stayed there I asked for an ironing board (always do shirts after I arrive) and they came back after 5 minutes saying another customer needed it!!!

Justin,
You're gonna love it. I lived there and it is an amazing city. So much to see and do. It really all depends on what you are looking for. The tourist bit, the culture, etc.
I would HIGHLY recommend the helicopter trip. Liberty Helicopters. They have a website. Try Google. £60 per person for a 15 minute flight.
Apart from that all I can advise is to do a bit of research before you go and then get out there and explore.
Have a great time.
Jason.
Feel free to mail me if you need any help.

Ditto what Badger says and book a limo from JFK to the hotel, its only about £80 return and a great way to arrive in NY.
This hotel is between Times Sq and the park, on 7th Ave and 57th St. 2 minutes walk to either. Maddison and 5th Ave are also only a couple fo minutes walk away and you are in the middle of Theatre Land.
There is a Hooters bar next door

not wanting to rub it in, but my girlfriend won this weekend for 2 in NY thanks to a Lucky Strike promotion when stuck in an airport last summer
We're staying in a top hotel, free tour of the city (we've chosen the culture tour). They paid for 2 nights in a hotel, so we extendend the flight home so that we could stay a couple of days extra
. We go next weekend and I forgot that we needed a hotel for the extra nights
I'm very keen to take in the music scene, especally to visit the places / clubs where hip hop and house music evolved - I think I'll research that on another web forum
She's looking forward to the shops, the helicopter ride sounds like a must do event
Justin (lucky b@stard)
Edit to say Pete, the hotel I booked is on 7th and 55st
, I'll try to get the girlfriend into Hooters, food is good I hear...

Just came back from New York about 2 weeks ago!
The helicopter ride is a must!! They can't fly you over the city now but you fly around Manhattan and around the statue of liberty.
New York is great we loved it, was there for three days managed to see all the main sites. Didn't want to come home, but we had 12 days in Florida to look forward to after so wasn't too bad
Enjoy your trip!
P.S. We stayed in the Metro Hotel, was nice but can’t remember what it cost as was included in price of holiday.

Best Western Presidential is good too, thats where we stayed in Feb, 45th/Broadway I think, anyway, Times Square is on the same block, 1 minute walk at the most
Stayed in the Holiday Inn too, a bit further up on 57th/Broadway
bit further to walk to Times Square tho, but closer to Central Park
