Question

Just doing a few quotes with Esure.

There's no difference in cost between insuring my house for £50k and £70k of building cover.

Can you over-insure a house? Is that likely to cause you grief?

Hello

The last two insurance policies that I have had contained a "no limit" buildings cost, so I assume that this doesn't matter.

Nope cant over insure as what will happen is should it burn down or need repair then it will get fixed by the Ins co.

Normally if you under insure then its taken pro rata, so if you insure a 100k rebuild cost house for 75k they will only pay 75% of any reapirs.

Under insure works the same for contents.

You can over insure your car as well if you want, but you wont get any extra over its agreed value. I say agreed as a certain amount of negotiation can take place at the time of a total loss.

Another thing with being under insured on property that I didn't know about until recently is that in the event of a partial loss of property, the insurance co. totals up the value of everything, not just what you are claiming for - so if you are claiming for 50% of your property (worth say £50k) and you are insured for £50k, then the company may try to only pay out £25k, even though you think you are insured up to £50k.

I think that's correct - it was based on a discussion I had with a neighbour a few months ago...

Thumbs up

Chris

Our current contents insurance is with Abbey National and has no limit. And it was the best quote we found! Just got a quote of them for buildings and contents insurance on the house we're buying both are for no limit, and it seems pretty good!

Will have a look at your link and get a quote to compare.

Esure are coming out around £170, Direct Line want £260 and Tesco £310.

All based on same values and excesses. Why DL and Tesco differ so much when they are backed by the same company, who knows?

That's okay - when I visit IanW in Surrey, I'm glad to get back North of Watford into the land of sensibly priced houses

Just renewed mine - £400k buildings, £40k contents, £213 with legal and general.. they are always cheapest for me, but also provide decent cover (unlike tesco's, direct line etc)

If anyone else is renewing, I have some vouchers which give me (and you) a £10 voucher (wow) if you take up cover with them

So what do people think is a reasonable amount for content's insurance? You know, if the worst happens and your home is razed to the ground and you have to replace everything?
