Yup, if they are CSS encrypted you'll need to rip the files first with something like DVD decrypter. If they are not encrypted then it does not need ripping and can be done on the fly. DVD2One will tell you if it needs to be ripped before hand.
I've backed up quite a few of my own personal collection. You can squeeze quite a lot onto one 4.7Gb DVD-R with the extras removed, movie only.

I've just got a DVDwriter,Toshiba something £155.
To backup films you own you can use dvdxcopy but my preffered way is to use dvdshrink and Nero.
Most dvd's are 6-7gb and blank discs are 4.3gb.Therefore you need to either cut out the extra's and/or compress it.Using dvdshrink (freeware) just drag the largest file,the film,and if its still over 4.3gb compress it.Then burn using Nero.
You loose all the extra's but end up with the best quality film.
