thing I don't understand is why he'd need to access any sites in the first place. I can't see any relevance. They are known to exist and contain vile images what more is there to know. I can't imagine anyone wants to read a book that in anyway describes what the images are

Tricky one this. I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt because he stood up and admitted it and paid the price for it.
If he had been dishonest and denied it totally the police would have found no dodgy material and they wouldn't have been able to prove his card wasn't cloned or whatever.
That Massive Attack guy 3D got off entirely because the only evidence they had was a credit card number. He denied everything and they found nothing illegal (except for some dodgy powder

So I think that at worst he is just plain stupid. Anyone who uses the internet regularly has been re-directed to these kind of sites. You look, feel disgusted and try to close the three hundred windows that have just popped up.
To put your tracable credit card details into a child-pornography site is just naive and stupid. Even if it's to "just have a look", you are immediately giving these people money and hence justifying there existance.
Being on the sex offenders list for five years, and all the publicity has heopfully taught other people not to "have a look".

At best he is a stupid man who made a bad decision - assuming he was really researching for a book - surely he would have been better talking to the Police first!
At worst he should be put down or at least chemicallly castrated and labotomised so he is no longer a threat to kids. Also all his wealth/assets given to kids charities.
They must have given him the benefit of the doubt or surely jail time would have been given out - still who knows as long as he does not attack any burglars in his own home he is probably safe from prison!
