Hi Everybody!

I just had to tell you this and I won't blame you if you don't believe me.

Coming past the gatso eastbound just before J3 on the M4 this morning I get the usual warning of radar. However, a few hundred yards later it pipes up with another remark:

"Warning! the drawbridge is up." and some uncharacteristic beeps

Well, I know that there were some overnight roadworks on the M4 but I see no drawbridge.

Its quite difficult to control a scoob whilst in fits of laughter.

Seriously though has anyone else had any strange remarks come out of their detector. Maybe I should get on to the manufacturer and ask what other gems are available.

How about:

Caution your fly is undone.

or

White van alert!

etc....

Not me but a Scoob owning mate with the same radar detector has had the same warning. They're not 100% precise, and I'd rather have one that's jittery than lazy

ours had a complete bleep attack on the A1 at the weekend. It was either no sound or all out blast for no reason. Am looking forward to drawbridges on the m25 though

Bel's generally don't work, mine has never detected a gatso, but it's great at letting me know where supermarkets are with electronic doors

Mine is great on the m25 and the run into Southend!
Not sure about the 'laser alert' bit though. I think it gets confused with a bridge!

i've had a 990i (pretty much same as 550) for ~3years and it works on Gatsos every time. It does however go nuts now and again and bleeps alerts when it "shouldn't", but has never been diagnosed with tourette syndrome like yours.

I have a VLR Bel, it is EXCELLENT at detecting Gatso's.
And yes! I have also had a "drawbridge" alert! LOL!
As to laser alerts under bridges... yep those too!

On my Escort, I have a set of PIAA driving lights with 55w bulbs. With one of my detectors, turning off the lights will trip a laser alarm. I can only guess that at some moment, as the filaments cool, they must be sending the right wavelength of red light to trip the detector.

Or my electrical system is bolloxed.

I have a Bel 990i and the 2 last weeks, it has been going crazy, weird bleeps and one continual long tone

Even saying Laser Alert down a narrow country lane

Cool

Dr Nick,

it sounds like the SWS (Safety Warning System) which is used in the US.

If an incident occurs, the police can transmit on special frequencies that get picked up by radar detectors to give a (verbal or textual) warning of things ahead.

Other alerts include "School Zone Ahead", "Ice On Road Ahead", "Oversize Vehicle In Transit", Stationary Police Vehicle Ahead".

You know, stuff to improve Road Safety!!!

You probably picked up some spurious signal which set it off.

Shame that our country thinks that GATSOs will have the same safety effect

my 990i today starting picking up K-band at 9 in a spot i go past every day that has nothing of any significance nearby and hasn't gone off there for 3 years. 9 means more than an auto-door on a garage. odd.
