well ones only 2 and the others 5 months from being born so i'll let them off....but 7 yr old is having a laugh!

what is the modern equivalent of Speak and Spell? My wife bought some crappy kids computer thing from toys r us but it was junk and at £80 went straight back for a refund. how on earth the kids are supposed to figure it out when i couldnt i dont know!

anyway, whats a good EASYYYYY toy, ie. turn on and start spelling, my 7 yr old is not an MTV /Playstation /DVD modern retard so while she can climb a tree she cant figure out a toy with more functions than a thing with many functions.

or is there some good software out there?

Tiggs

ps- i was in remedial classes for spelling so i aint fussed but Mrs Tiggs is!

only of limited use though, she has plenty of this already and to do anymore becomes a hassle for her (she doesnt want to spend ALL her time being supervised) and for us (we dont want to spend 2 hrs a day sat with her)

she has plenty of free time where she would happily spend 30-45mins sat with a good spelling toy on her own.

we want to capitalise on that time not simply avoid doing any work ourselves.

How about playing scrabble with her? give her some kind of incentive to beat you. She'd also learn some good words and their meanings.

children's scrabble is good
I think there is a company called VTEC (no, not the Honda engines) that do educational toys in a non American tone. I'm sure that's what my friends' kiddies have

Is it that they have difficulty spelling or are just being lazy

My little sister (11yr old) can be like this sometimes. Then when I point out if she noticed anything wrong, she picks up on the spelling mistake right away.

Anyway, I think my sis had a VTech computer for spelling and arithmetic. Hope that wasn't the same piece of cr@p you bought from Toys 'r Us.

There's a really good book called Letterland. My Kids used it and it was an excellent teaching aid. Very phonetic. With very good accompanying pictures to help. Think I still have it in the loft somewhere ,,,,, my kids are 22 & 24 now ~ahem .

I thought all the "Speak and Spells" were bought up by the US government to help beat SETI@Home.....

I have to say my spelling was appalling 2-3 years ago but since I have started using computers, online BBS’s and chat rooms it has improved by leaps and bounds. It’s just practice at the end of the day kids see reading, writing and spelling as a chore and can’t be bothered. Talking to people online on the other hand they might find enjoyable and will give them practice with spelling it did for me.
