Just finished reading the motoring section in the Sunday Mirror.

The government have a fleet of Fabia's they are trialing which have the Automatic GPS speed limiting system fitted. They know their location and speed limit on that road and you can guess the rest.

They are hoping that manufacturers will fit it without legislation but the Governments think tank wants it law by 2013.

A little red button or foot to the floor allows the speed limit to be broken for short bursts in an emergencey situation.

As long as it allows emergency override i spose its not so bad. Definately a good thing for 30 and 40 limits.

But the button will be being pressed a lot when i hit the 60s

Have a read of http://www.abd.org.uk/pr/225.htm to see why robots are not the solution to road safety

Type R, they'll probably have GPS up links so they can do away with cameras altogether and keep sending the bills; 'Mr Type R, you were recorded as doing 41 MPH in a 40 MPH limit, that's 3 points and a bucket of cash please'!

Techies will find ways round them and it will be unpoliceable - although it would be very satisfying after being stopped, reactivating the device and turning to the officer to say "but its impossible I was speeding officer, look my speed limiter is here and it confirms it!"

My thouoghts are...

What would happen if the red button "malfunctioned" and got stuck on ;D ie with a lump of Blue-tack etc

Also what if you had a crash whilst the government were controlling you - presumably not your fault so you get to full no claims !

GPS can't penetrate tunnels so you could do the tonne through Dartford.

Why would they want to diddle themselves out of all the Speed camera tax they get - they will just charge more on a tax disc or petrol.

To bring the system to chaos it just takes the guy at the front to go really slow and then speed up to the limit anytime someone tries to overtake him, no one could ever get past and the scheme would have to be abolished.

Now if instead the invested the money in fitting all vehicles with Tracker type devices, then they could cut vehicle crime dramatically - and because any stolen car could be traced, that would have an impact on crimes that would use cars.

But that doesn't do anything to get people off the roads though

I reckon if someone we have never heard of was to run for prime minister with the only policies to abolish fuel tax and speed cameras and any stupid traffic ideas ( congestion charge ) they would be in without doing anything else. I reckon someone should ask Clarkson to run !

How dangerous is that? Most of us on here would be driving one-handed most of the time (other hand keeping red button depressed)

The day they make this law and force me to have it fitted to one of my vehicles will be one day before I rip it out and stick it on one of my neighbours tortoises.
I would consider it a basic violation of my human rights for Tony and his cronies to know where I was or had been at any moment in time. This would be the ultimate 'Big Brother' privacy invasion and I can't see any government being dumb enough to try and bring this in - even Herr Blair!!

Can they attach these devices to humans to do the opposite? I mean, people in this country do not know how to walk. Just try walking down a slightly busy street at a reasonable pace and people just stop, dawdle, step in front of you etc.

Big Brother is watching you.

A simple removable 'brick' on the override button would be about as techie as it needs to get !

I think this scheme will be less popular than the poll tax, I don't think people will stand for it.
