nit pickers viewing 2nd hand cars

Argh!
Doesn't it really annoy you when you are trying to sell a 14 year old car
and someone refuses to buy it cos one or two bits don't work perfectly!!!
1 rear window that *probably* has a non-working electric motor, and the radio crackles a bit.....
Errr...he didn't want to buy it (at VERY good price) as it wasn't perfect.
What do you expect - it IS 14 years old, and we're talking £1k for a car that
cost around £23k new (It's a Merc).
Fair enough, buyers market, but he just wanted it as a runaround......

all true init & does seems pedantic to niggle over small faults on an old car & it shud really b seen as a negotiating point but equally there r plenty to choose from presumably so may just b sum1 who wants it 100% from word go. Maybe asking too much & dont help u but as u say tiz a buyers market

I agree - it is a buyers market, and he is perfectly entitled to walk away, but from the description he gave of what he wanted it for, and given price reflects non-concours status, he was quite picky.
For a runaround, mechanics come first - a window fault in the rear is a minor thing when the car is only for him and him alone getting to/from work!
Ah well......maybe once he's had a look around, he may come back.

If they are just little problems, why have you not fixed them? If its just a motor fix it......if the radio crackles, remove it, or by a new one.
I too have looked at old cars, and in the end picked a good one becuase I was fussy.
If you have neglected theses jobs, how many more have you neglected?
food for thought.

davyboy - yes, I wondered when someone was going to say this.
Ahem - I have to agree with you. :-)
However, to ME, a non-working rear window is too costly to fix at the present time and price reflects this.....also a pain to fix.
Crackly radio - would need a new one, but hey, £30 for a similar one.......
What I am trying to say is that for budget motoring, does the general public expect PERFECTION!?!!

OK - it has one or two rust bubbles on driver's door and front nearside wing, but has been same as this for 2.5 years with no change....bodywork is not concours, but is good enough.
History - has been serviced by MB main dealer up until a few years ago but I have no proof other than word of mouth (and the dealer telling me when it was last serviced there - so assume they have history on PC). I know the previous 2 owners sort of (they were both medical doctors). Have history from last few years....including some main dealer receipts.

I've put my wee Punto on the market under 2 weeks ago
- 1 guy called and said the MOT was too short - Feb 2004?? WTF?
- 1 chinese woman offered me £1200 for the car, when I advertise it at £1975 ono, without even seeing it. Then she said its too expensive - the car is mint and is worth more according to Parkers!
- 1 guy said he really liked the car but wanted a blue 2 door. Mine is a black 4 door - as it said in the advert.
People can be weird. As much as you want to sell the car, I'm finding I'm getting fussy with those interested. Works both ways.

I've also had the "I was really looking for something else" line when selling stuff.
I was selling my mint, fully historied, 3 year old Suzuki 600 motorbike and one guy that looked at said "it's too expensive at £3000, I was looking at a new Honda for £5500". Riiiiight.

PS Car is mechanically tip-top - he couldn't fault it mechanically....also has MoT until Dec, and 6 months tax - for a car around £1k!!!!
Surely that is the most important thing in a runaround for 1 person!
