Unhappy

A person is to be employeed in a foreign office and brought over to the UK to be trained by you - it then transpires that this individual will be doing your job from the foreign office, ie. replacing you.

(I plan to leave asap, assuming other work is available)

Outline your concerns & negotiate your payoff BEFORE passing on your knowledge & experience. (make sure you include references in it !)

It's always easy to burn bridges - but it generally will catch up with you in the end !!!

Train the feckerreally badly. Tell him to do things that will make the systems fail (But not till you leave)

Then walk.

Thumbs up

Don't train him- then they can find some other mug to do their dirty work. Point out your not being paid as a trainer(unless thats what you do) and have no intention of training someone to replace you.

Play hardball with them- the worst they can do is dismiss you and then you'll probably have a good case for contructive dismissal.

If you know this for a fact then I'd say approach your manager mate and ask him what he suggests. You should make it clear you aim to leave and will 'work to rule' untill your notice period is up. I presume that nowhere in your terms and conditions of employment does it stipulate you are responsible for training people...therefore it's not your job and you won't do it.
Your boss can avoid this unpleasantness by drafting up a nice redundancy package for you to ensure you stay till this guys training is complete. I managed to get a years salary for 2 months work this way LOL
Sorry it's happening to you though mate.
Chuck
PS i'll be over your way Saturday or Sunday so we need to arrange backbox delivery. (Thorpe park opens this weekend )

I think they call it a compromise agreement, if they are not acutually making your position redundant! That way if they want they can put someone else in the your post if needed.

The advantage is that normally they will pay you more than they legally have to, and it protects them as you normally can not 'bad mouth' or sue the company.

Whichever way, get it checked over by a solicitor!

Good luck with the job hunting!

Unfortunately, I'm contract, as the position never went permie like they promised. So you could probably write my employment rights on the back of a *** packet!

Thanks for the suggestions, made me laugh if nothing else.

I reckon I've got a minimum of 3 months left here. Hope the markets pick up a bit.

PMSL

I won't have to train them badly, because subsequent training from other junior members will teach extremely bad habits!

Picture the scene:

DrEvil punching someones face for 2 minutes...

DrEvil: "Do you get it yet?"
Trainee: "Stop hitting me"

*punch, punch, punch* for another two minutes...

DrEvil: "Do you understand now?"
Trainee: *whimper*

*punch, punch, punch* for another two minutes...

DrEvil: "What about now?"
Trainee: "PLEASE stop......"

Repeat until:

DrEvil: "Are you trained yet?"
Trainee: "yes, yes.... but for the love of God stop punching me in the face!!!"

I think you could be done before lunchtime!!

Alex, if you are not contracted, teach them **** all, work until you have another position, then fork off.

Dr Evil, funnily (or not) enough, i have a friend in banking who is in exactly this position. Their office is being re-located, and they will have to train everybody before being made redundant. How demoralising is that?

The way they've made the people do it is to tell them they won't receive a good redundancy package if their replacements aren't trained well, and additionally they're being incented to stay with the promise of a decent bonus if they do not leave the company before handover date.

Seems pretty clinical, but by all accounts most people, not surprisingly, have signed up to the financial incentives and are sticking it out.

Andy - stop it, I'm in tears with laughter here

Telboy - the only incentive I have is I don't have another job offer on my doorstep, yet......... But I hope to change that very soon.
