There is no definition of the size of the island! Britain is an island. Perhaps he never leaves the island but does in fact 'escape' from whatever is 'trapping' him.

"A man was trapped on an island in the middle of a large and deep lake. He could not swim and had no boat or means of making one. He waited desperately for help, but none came. Eventually he managed to escape. How?"
Can anyone give me any clues?

So he could wait until a really hot summer when the lake would evaporate anyway, or wait until winter

Nowhere in the question does it mention that the lake is in a climactic zone that would allow the water to freeze. As the question specifically mentions that the lake is both large and deep, making freezing less likely, I'll take it that just walking over the frozen surface come winter is not the answer. Besides, might the man not have starved to death waiting for this?
Any other ideas?

Ratman, whether it mentions likelihood of the lake freezing or not, I'm willing to bet that the answer is he waits 'til the lake freezes.

What would you do if you were that man?
I think I'd jolly well LEARN to swim! Or dig that tunnel.

Taking it at face value one could argue that he was simply "trapped" up a tree, for example, and the fact that the island was in the middle of the lake is superfluous. He merely wanted to get untrapped and eventually climbed down, say. Trapped in an odd word - marooned would have been better if you were meant to think that he wanted to get off the island. Perhaps he simply died - is that an escape?
I'll get me boat....
