Dog of mine ate chocolate, didn't do it any real harm, apart from giving it a dose of 'the runs'. Boy, did it smell!

My understanding is that if a doggie eats a lot of choc then it can cause them problems. When maggie was a puppy she munched on either a very rich choc cake or a bar of choc and we were rather worried, but she was fine, she eats the odd half a box of malteasers now and then and apart from her looking rather sheeplike, cos she knows she has been bad, she seems fine.
Unless the dog has muched through a huge bar of choc then I'd not worry too much. If in doubt, ring you vet and ask them.

Salt is great fun, and I regularly use it to melt darned snails (i cant stand snails) One of the buggers got roasted on my turbo the other week - don't know how it got there? Perhaps it thought the turbo was a BIG snail!

I've just asked the wife who is a vet...
Chocolate contains Theobromine which is posionous to dogs. It'll depend on how much/type of chocolate and size/type of dog as to whether it'll be a serious problem. (I've heard of a labrador killed by half a bar of bourville.) You can get special chocolate from pet shops which is ok, but it's amazing how many people you see giving their animals Diary Milk.
The other common thing that people often do which can be harmfull is give their animals (particularly cats) milk. Most animals can't digest the sugar (lactose) in milk and it gives them the squits.
Cheers.
Steve.

Tis true that Human chocolate can be harmful to dogs, something to do with damages their digestive system.
Personally I wouldnt give our dog the chocolate, he's quite happy eating everything else

Our Dog, a Tibetan Terrier ate loads of (illegal) chocs last Xmas. Pinched them off the table one night, then also helped himself out of my handbag another time. No ill effects whatsoever. But I have heard that its not supposed to be good for them.

Yes chocolate is dangerous for dogs to eat the quantity that kills depends on the size of dog and yes dark chocoalte is worse..saying this though maggie often still eats large amounts ..recently nearly a whole box of maltesers(a large one)
Dont take any risks as it can kill think its to do with cocoa content.but cant remember all the boring details..lol mainly as maggie has survived more choc than most humans can !
grapes and mushrooms are also poisonous but maggie often eats both of these ..its a case of they will kill in large amounts.
oh and snails are not good for dogs
