Ramada Jarvis: taking the P*ss, or what?
#1
Went to a wedding at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel at Hull last nite, where the Mintex had it's Rally HQ too.
Went to the bar to buy one pint of 1664, and one glass of red wine.
Cost?? £7.55!!!!
I mean, WTF??
I queried the prices to be told that the beer was £2.16, and the wine was £4.39 for a glass.
Is this taking the p*ss or what?
My missus says she's never paid more, even in London Hotels, but a guy I met later told me he paid £18 for 6 bottles of Budweiser in Cheshire
Rip offr Britain, or what?

I'd normally pay £2.80 ish for a pint of premium lager, that is steep for an un-named wine though.
Worst rip off I can think of was £2.50 for a Mars bar from the mini-bar of a Radisson hotel in London.

paid £19 for two small baguetes, one 1/2 of coke and a cup of tea at Northampton Hilton
and that was supposedly a guick bite (for 2 people) so I didn't have to pay £10 to get out of the car park - robbing bar stewards
even the "southerner" we were with thought it was a rip-off...

Paid £77 for 5 JD and Cokes in Gstaad (Switzerland) once about 5 years back.
Should try the hotels in Madrid - about 2 euros for a large beer (not a pint) and you get free food (well Tapas anyway).

I can almost cope with paying OTT for booze at a tourist trap. When we, and another couple, sat at a pavement cafe looking out at Notre Dame, I never turned a hair at £12 for 4 drinks, 10 years ago, but in Hull??? And in the pitch dark? (probably the best wya to see Hull) :
My only hope is that the happy couple did a deal with the hotel for money off the reception etc from the bar bill.

I am on footie tour in Hull this weekend. Looks dismal for the beer kitty.
We are staying at a far classier joint than the Ramada anyway. Our hotel is on the Beverley Road opposite Weatherspoons and the Hogshead and is £20 en suite with breakfast a night, class joint.
I paid £9.20 for two bottles of WKD and a pint of cider on Friday night in Newport, I nearly fell of my shirt !!.

A sound proposition, neatly put and beautifully executed. Ah good old JD, where would the serious p*sshead be without him. Monday night specials Guinness £1 a pint, Newky Brown £1.20, ah.

The glass of wine was probably 250ml i.e. a third of a bottle, so a whole bottle would have been £13.07 which isn't unreasonable for a restaurant (and therefore hotel).
The other scam to get people to buy more is these bars which only serve spirits in doubles, or else they use 33ml measures instead of 25ml measures. It's legal to do so, but it means they can up the price and you can't compare becuase the measure is a different size.
