Do I need to pay for road Tax?

Hi
Can anyone advise please.
I bought a car today today from auction but it has no tax. I will not use it on the road till mon when I should also get my ins cover note so I can tax it. Do I have to pay for March (or even longer as I dont know when tax ran out). From memory if I want to tax it from 1 April I have to sign the car wasnt on the road till last taxed but I dont know this.
i.e. Do I need to tax the car for March (even if it was on the road) if I didnt own it?

don't use it on the road til tuesday and you're fine. Use it on monday and strictly speaking you have to tax it from monday, which means taxing it to cover march as well.
Most people would use it monday, tax it tuesday and declare on the V10(?) that it was off the road until tuesday.
If you want to abide by the law don't use it til tuesday.

If you're *that* bothered, write to the DVLA and find out when it was last taxed and then pay the tax from the last date, that way you're sure you're complying with the law.
On the other hand, if you're like 99.99% of the rest of the population, just tax it from tuesday and stop worrying

when you send the V5(log book) away for the new keeper details on it also asks when you received the vehicle just put on the saturdays date and tax it on monday for the 1st april(can do it for the 1st of the next month 2 working day before ) you`ll need insurance from when you own the vehicle.
