Well I've been having problems sleeping for the past few weeks. All I ever do is stare at the ceiling at night. I've tried everything bar drugs as I don't believe in them. Its gotten to the point now that I'll try anything you guys suggest to me. Any natural remedy that might help me out? Cheers people.

As a pre-emtive thank you, I leave you guys a clip of a very sweet cuddly insect that I found on another website. Goodnight.

Suffer from the same problem !!!! just look at the post time!!!

Couple of tricks, meant to work, although cant say they always do.

Dont lie in bed, get up and do something until you feel tired. If you can find anything to do then get up and sit on the most uncomfortable chair you can find until you feel yourself falling asleep, then go to bed.

Failing that then its gonna be alcohol !!!

That's wierd ... I've just spent the past 45+ mins trawling around the internet for information on just that!

From what I understand, serotonin is the key to a balanced sleep. But it has to be a healthy balance of serotonin intake, too little and no change, too much and you become more 'wakeful'

There's a few pages I found, that seem to make sense - though I'd want a doctor to confirm what they say before accepting them blindly. Basically the products I've seen suggested in themain are, St Johns Wort and 5HTP. These can be purchased from most health stores, and in both cases you build up to a balanced intake, which from what I can gather can vary from person to person, so you start at say 50mg and work up to a level where the effect is what you want, and you are sleeping well again.

Some URLs I stumbled across:
- http://www.seroctin.com/learn_more_links.htm
- http://www.cyberspacehealthclinic.co...ssue_0086.html

I've no expereince with either of the two mentioned options above, but would like to know more! I have taken temazepam in the past for lack of sleep (at the Doctors prescription) and they did nothing but make it harder to wake up in the morning!

If anyone knows anything further I'd be interested to know too ...

Given that the above was compiled at nearly 6am, after some 12+ hours without sleep, I'm going to look further too

curious research, seratonin (not sure about spelling) is the chemical in the brain that controls how happy u feel, (i.e. depression related), ST Johns Wort is a well know natural remedy for mild depression, although i wouldnt say that either of these have a direct impact on sleep though.

Have it on good authority that taking pills that increase the rate of seratonin (sic) released from the brain should not really effect whether you are more or less tired.

Interested to see what else you find out

I tried various herbal remedy tablets and although they made me mildly sleepy before bedtime, I had no luck having a decent night's sleep.
There was new research just announced in the last 2 weeks that sleep is actually induced by the EYES !
There's some chemical which the eye/eyelid/whatever gives off which produces a "veil of darkness" over the cornea and basically "switches off the lights".....whether this will actually help sleep is a mystery to me since my mind races during periods of insomnia and I can't switch it off.....

Which reminds me, must dig out the Faithless track !

I cut out all forms of caffine about 6 months ago (Tea, Coffee, Cola, etc) and that made a huge difference.

Ah, i can't really do that. I like the taste of it. I just don't drink it past 5 pm. It keeps me awake for my lectures which seems to be the only time i can sleep.

A wee dram of Scotch before you go to bed is the answer

I've always found distraction a good method.Don't just go to bed, switch of the lights and try and sleep. Your putting yourself under to much pressure. Instead maybe read for a while or better still listen to the radio. You'll be amazed at how often you'll quickly fall asleep listening to something else and not whats 'buzzing' in your head. You may wake up later to switch of the radio but by then you'll be in a nice relaxed state and will quickly fall back asleep.
Something which has also helped me is to take an asparin before bed. Don't know why but it really works.
Good luck.

Cool

Katana et all.....

I have never ever had a problem sleeping until just before New Year when I quit smoking

Apparently this is common and supposedly lasts only a week or two but I've seen every hour on the clock, every night, so only now do I appreciate what you guys are having to put up with

Apparently no caffeine after midday and no strenuous exercise late in the evening is supposed to help.

If you are really stuck, then a double dose of night nurse certainly does the trick but can leave you feeling pretty groggy the next morning

If you look at the ingredients of Night Nurse you'll find it's "alcohol, 18% (or 24%, I can't remember which) by volume". So it's about as strong as port or sherry. Two capfuls of that is equivalent to a capful of Scotch (or brandy, or vodka).

Just don't give yourself too hard a time about it Katana. When you find yourself thinking about this problem give yourself a :slap: and think about something else. This really is no big deal. You'll be over-sleeping for work real soon!

As Finchy from The Office would say "The spider is an arachnid, not an insect, yeah? Six legs or eight legs. Eh? Thank you."

So, more unlucky people with insomnia?! I've tried everything. Having to take sleeping tablets now! Mind you, saying that, they don't even seem to be working anymore. Had 3 hours last night. I'm totally exhausted.

Leave me the car in your will before you do

Even when I feel tired and exhausted, I get about 1-2hrs rough sleep then it's wakey-wakey for the rest of the night.

You can have Fiesta Wonder Woman's Ferrari instead? Just go to the chat and ask her for it. She'll give it to you straight away..
