Never mind all this war rubbish lets talk BEER!

I hate the rubbish lager/beer that seems so popular these days.

By this I mean Stella (regarded as the cheapest dross in Belgium where it originates from not that the english stuff is anywhere near as good as this) and other cheap and nasty chemical lager like Carling/Fosters/1664 and all that stuff. Also most of these so called "premium" lagers arent even made in the place they are supposed to come from. They are brewed in an aluminium vat somewhere outside Slough.
The only mass market exceptions I can think of are Becks, Hooegarden, Leffe, Budvar and Staropramen.

Also "smooth" bitters like John Smiths/Boddingtons cream- pasteurised nitrogen filled rubbish nothing at all to do with real beer.

Extra Cold Guiness? whats that all about- try asking for extra cold in a pub in Eire they'll tell you to **** off

Can anyone explain what they like about this dross? Or is it just a case of don't know any better

My favourites are German Wheat Beers, almost all Belgian beer and traditional English Ales.

Lefte Blonde, Duvel or Hoegarttens are good Belgian beers.
Kolsh is good stuff, your only allowed to brew it in the old city limits of Cologne.
But the two who stand tall for me are Dog and the black stuff.
Newcastle Brown and Guinness.

Kolsch- now you are talking that is Koln's finest- very, very good.

As for a bottle of Brown I lived near the brewery in my University days- the smell was out of this world- and turned me into a beer-holic!

As for proper Guinness its the DB's. If you get the chance try the export stuff you get in bottles with the writing in red. Its fantastic.

Poor old Davyboy -some of my comments must have hit a raw nerve. If you don't like my comments why bother posting? I guess the truth hurts LOL

further edited to add: different debate

yet further edited to add: this thread dates from 1999- how sad that you are so desperate to marginalise someone you resort to bringing up a largely unrelated thread from yrs ago. I see from your profile you are a 'ring regular perhaps I'll see you there![Edited by Fluffer - 3/27/2003 3:45:34 PM]

British Pub beer/larger drinkers are ripped off and are drinking stuff that would be BANNED from the beer festivals in germany.

Fluffer.....It has to be real ale. My ocal has 6-8 at any time and they change weekly. They range from 3% to 7% so you can have one that suits your mood.

Failing that the Guinness is a safe bet.

lol - this coming from the person who presents a `reasoned, well argued` discussion and refrains from `name calling`...

Seems like you've been on the beer yourself?

Looks like the self appointed Scooby Net mafia have stuck their heads above the parapet. Stay on topic please!

Try the Budweiser sold in the US - tastes like a sweetened armpit. It sells by the trainload.

At least now there are many good small breweries here, you can go to almost any large town and find one. Some of them are great.

Over here the dark Guiness comes in bottles but also in cans which have a small CO2 gas cannister that adds foam when you open the can.

Personally I like Carling and Fosters (which is brewed in Reading, so almost "outside Slough" ). Each to their own I suppose.

Had an evening drinking Hoegarttens (sp?) once. Not that I remember

What exactly do you like about it?

edited to add: I tried Fosters in Oz and it was far better than the English Stuff

My vote for best antipodean beer : Coopers Sparkling Ale- its nectar from the gods

honeydew is nice cool on a hot day...
Hobgoblin's also quite nice...

prefer the more `hopsy` type european pilsners to lager.. staraparomen, budvar (*proper budweiser*) etc..

can't stand dark beer though, or `hazy` beers like weisenbeer. Drinking one makes you feel like you've been slapped by an elephant...

Aus beer all tastes a bit like ****, IMHO. VB is discusting, all the `ice` beers are a bit rank..... Couldn't find anywhere that actually sold export beers..

KrankyD- you've got that right I have been on the beer- one of the lads brought in some bottles of "Erdinger" and we've been drinking since lunch!

Summer Lightning is great.

All beers made by the Hogs Back Brewery are very nice too.

Erdinger is an unfiltered wheat beer and it isn't my favourite either. My fav wheat beer is "Schneider Weisse Aventinus" a truly monumental mind re-arranger!

Still anything better than the 1664 they sell in the bar down below.

green+blue could have been "Berliner Weisse" a truly original and interesting beer style that uses a base flavoured with syrup! Weak in alcohol but still good.

Naah - it was weisen been with a shot of banan juice!

the blue + green one, I don't have a clue. I think it was apple weisen and some blue vodka or something?

It was quite lethal. Could only manage 5 or 6 before I had to go to the next pub
