just been tipped of by a mate at BBC worldwide that OBL has been caught in pakistan.
can anyone confirm? suspect it's a spoof but apparently an item has just been on BBC News 24 but not yet hit the beeb website.

It's not a "spoof" as such HG, there are rumours like this almost daily at the moment, most of which can be disregarded.
Earlier on today there was talk that the U.S. were going in tonight. Probably not true either.
I have access to Bloomberg and Reuters news services, which are normally amongst the first with official statements like the CIA's i mentioned. But rumours are spread in the financial world quicker than wildfire - i'm convinced they're often started by people merely to try and push the market in a particular direction temporarily.

May I be cynical enough to suggest that even if true, USA would want to supress it as it would negate calls for war in Iraq :-)
..ie, he has been captured, but CIA don't want news released for a few weeks - did they not deny the 2nd in command had been captured too (for 2 weeks?!)

false alarm this time or not, i agree with you. i'd go further - OBL is a useful boogeyman. even if he was caught, i can't see it ever being announced: why kill the golden goose?
