Question

As per title, I'm sure I've seen an add for a box that fits between the phone socket and the PC that lets you know when someone is trying to call you - flashing light or something similar. Anyone know where I could get such a thing ?

Kevin,

I've seen a box you can plug into the phone line, and it flashes/sounds when someone calls and you're online.

I can't remember who can supply one, but I think they were about £30.

The only stipulation is that you have to a 'Call Waiting' option, which is not available with some the providers, although you'll be fine with BT and the big cable companies.

I'll see if I can find some more info.

Hope this helps
Andy

Aren't you supposed to turn off call-waiting if you use a modem 'cos the beeps it sticks in cause a bit of trouble with stuff like data going down the line, or have they got around that now?

We have that, as my wife works an "on call" rota.
Phone won't respond to the call waiting signal so u have to use ring back

But it drops the net connection when anyone calls.

Cool

Thanks chaps, PC world couldn't help, the BT service has now been discontinued and my modem sometimes gets kicked off when call waiting cuts in. I'll keep looking, someone must know who sells them - pi55 poor marketing I guess.

Wee box is Internet Alert 510 by Comtech
Needs call waiting
Warns when some phoning while your online
You then have the choice of staying online or picking up the phone
If you answer phone you lose internet connection
Works pretty well

IIRC, the new V92 modem spec's support dropping the line briefly to take a voice call.

No idea if ISPs are supporting V92 yet though!

Doug,

Cheers M8, I knew I'd seen it somewhere. I'll be ordering one later today.

Have had Internet Alert by Comtech for a couple of months now.

Works O.K.

You do have to suscribe to BT Call Waiting.

Bought mine from one of the auctions for I think twenty odd pounds.
