For those that havent heard already there are companies setting up doing mailshots telling small businesses they must register with the data protection registrar and offer to do the registration for £95. I received one yesterday.
Its very convincing as they put 'crown' symbols on the letterhead and have 'urgent notice' on the front. This is all bollox! You can register direct with the DPR for £30 and you are not obliged to do so.
I forgot to bring the letter with me, when I have it tomorrow I will put the companies *full* contact details on here and will be contacting cheshire trading standards.
be careful!

Wasn't this scam (or a similar one) the subject of that BBC2 series "easy money" recently? The bloke behind was banking £1000s per day ... but did get banged up for 5 years for fraud
Back to the drawing board then ...

brickboy,
yes it was and I did admire the guys bare faced cheek, he was making money by selling 'agencies' to go and 'offer' this service to small businesses, you could argue its just enterprising but the letter is very misleading so time to cause the f**kers some grief!

Anyone who has ever tried to work out if they have to register or not would gladly pay £200 to get a definitive correct answer . The data commisioner should take some responsibility for this !!!
