Question

Anyone know what the idea size for your screen size/desktop is supposed to be?

I guess bigger is better, but is there a trade-off between size and having to squint at the screen to make things out?

I did have a 15" monitor which was running at 1024x768, but have now got a 17" monitor which I've changed to 1152x864 so I can get more on.

But this is my work PC and I have to stare at it day-in, day-out - so I'd happily sacrifice some size if I'm going to start damaging my eyes.

Anyone who has a 17" monitor - what resoultion do you run it at?

Any ideas/info appreciated!

Cheers

Well I have a 21" at work running @ 1280*1024 and a 19" Trinitron at home running the same resolution. When I use a 17" monitor (which I also use occasionally at home, but used to use all the time), I run 1024*768, I started at 1280*1024 and them dropped to 1152*864 and then later to 1024*768, then I upgraded. Put simply for day in day out I found anything more than 1024*768 was making me squint/get closes to the screen to read. It does depend on the screen, I find Flater (trinitron etc) ones much easier to read and can usually use a slightly higher resolution.

1024 x 768 on cheap 17" (but higher refresh rates help => 85Hz)

1280 x 1024 on fair but very flat 19" running at 90Hz with True colour. Very easy to work with and I use it all day (and most of the evening)

Cheers

Depends what apps you are running.

If you are looking at text all day, then you don't want to push it, but if you are looking at pictures then you can. Keep refresh above 75Hz, and take at least 5 minutes each hour throwing your focus to infinity, and you should be fine.

I have a perma-monitor-tan and run 1600x1200 on a 19" writing code without too much trouble (I don't wear glasses).

If you find yourself squinting, drop the res. Simple.
