Worst cars!
#1
Sick of all the "whats best" threads- here's my nominations following a few rules- no examples of good cars which just happened to be crap when you had them ie Porsche 911 was always breaking down etc. The car has to be totally crap the day it left the factory! No American cars 'cos they are almost all total crap anyway.
Beat the awfulness of these if you can (listed in order #1 being the worst)
1. DAF Variomatic (total bag of sh1te)
2. Talbot Matra "Rancho" (the proto 5 door scoob!!!!not)
3.Lada Riva
4."MG" Montego
5.Allegro with "quartic wheel"
6.Triumph Stag (melt that engine!!!)
7.Ford Mk4 Escort (actually worse than the MK3)
8.Maestro (with voice computer and electrical malfunctions designed in)
9.Fiat Strada or "Ritmo" as it was known here- worlds worst dashboard (except Abarth)
10.YUGO (ALL MODELS)
Beat them if you can!

my mother had one of these "daf variomatic"- I did about 3,000 miles as a driver and another 8,000 as a passenger. The car was truly awful.

Which model???
I did 73,000 in my Dad's 66 Marathon, which I inherited. Kept me going all the way through College and University.
My parents had 7 of them in total, from a 55 in '72 through to a couple of 1300 Marathon Estates. 105mph and 0-60 in just over 12 secs - not to be sneezed at in 1976 from 1289cc...
Funny how my competition car used to cause such great hilarity when I turned up at scrutineering. People seeded behind me asked if I'd pull over when they caught me up on a stage. Never happened... It was usually me catching the cars in front of me!
The car was featured in Car and Car Conversions magazine, but then they always rated the Dafs as great cars. They ran a 66 in the British Rallycross Chamionship in the mid '70s, just about the time Jan de Rooy was European Rallycross Champion in his Daf 55 Coupe. Harry his brother was runner up. Left the numerous Escort TCs, 911s etc for dead!
Cheers!

Got to add my twopenneth here as I started my apprenticeship in a Austin Rover dealership in 1984 when the Maestro was about a year old by this time.Plus we still used to see Maxi's,Princesses/Ambassadors,lots of Metros as this was only 2 years old at the time, quite a few Stags, lots of MGB's and Midgets plus the odd Toledo/Dolomite thrown in for good measure.
If you think owning or driving these cars was bad you should have tried working on the piles of cack
What a revelation it was to go to work for Toyota dealership 7 years later after all that poo

Without a shadow of doubt the worst car ever produced is the new Vectra.
When you see these cars you can always tell if the driver has just picked the vehicle up cos they cant turn the indicators off!! The sequence goes:
Take a left turn, indicate left, complete the turn, left indicator still going, try to cancel left indicator, right indicator comes on - doh, try to cancel unwanted right indcator, left indicator comes on,....... and so on and so on, until the complete journey is finished or
However, sometimes when you do actually want to indicate the bloody thing switches off half way through the turn, so you indicte left, complete the turn, left indicator still going!!!!!
American heap of cr@p.

Mg Montego/Maestro was ok, had one bought (2.0 GTI) very cheaply nearly new, it was quick and handled better than a Sierra or Cavalier.
Worst in my opinon
BMW X5
I am sure they are wonderfull, but what a complete choppers motor.

The Austin Maxi
At the time BL were enjoying massive success with the Mini. You can imagine the designers meeting..
"Right, we got the mini, it's bringing in the green stuff.. Let's make a bigger car and call it the maxi (cute eh?) and make even more money! Simple."
Unfortunately nothing that made the mini a success, the size, the handling, the economy, the 'individuality' transferred to the bigger car, which left a rather unattractive, underpowered, bland piece of tin.. All IMHO..
Edited cos I type too fast for my fingers!

What was the name of that Lancia car in 1972'ish Delta? I think?
I had a friend who had one - for 9 months and it had rusted so badly it had to be taken off the road as it was dangerous!!
The only car I have EVER known that wouldnt pass an MOT when it was in the showroom!!
I cannot believe that cars were so bad in the 70's BUT THEY WERE!!!
You kiddies brought up on a diet of 90's cars have been spoilt silly!!

Sorry, but I have to disagree with:
The only problems were people not looking after the motor properly (using the wrong type of antifreeze mainly). They were actually gaining popularity when the US looked like they were going to ban convertibles so the project was scrapped.

My dad seems to have bought every crap car going. Here's a list of the ones I remember:
Ford Corsair V4 - loads of memories of this going pop within 5 minutes of starting a journey
Allegro - We had a 1.5 which suffered the famous "wheel falling off" trouble, so it got swapped for a 1.7 Sport (original hot hatch? ). The wheel fell off this one, too.
Vauxhall Viva HC estate - actually I loved this car as a kid and still have fond memories of it. I even bought a Firenza myself due the nostalgia aspect
Vanden Plas Princess 1300 - An Austin/Morris 1300 saloon with big chrome grill, leather seats and walnut picnic tables.
Triumph Acclaim - What the hell was my Dad thinking?
Then the time came when Dad got his first company car. What did he choose? A 1.3 Maestro. Well, it did have a sunroof
The list goes on and includes a Chevette, a Citroen BX, a Corsa and currently an Astra.
I think I like decent cars as a rebellion against my father. Thank you, this therapy session has been cathartic.

Yeah, couple of disagreements..
Hilman Imp.. wow! Saw one in a private rally blow away Lotus Cortinas, RS2000 MkII's and Bundles of Mini Coopers..
Also had a Triumph Acclaim and it went on for ever and ever.. Basically an Accord under the surface anyway..

I have driven a lot of sheds in my time, including Maestros and rusty Minis, but the worst of all by an absolute mile was a 6 year old low milage MK2 Astra 1.6. This car was suposed to be Network Q approved and it looked mint when I Bought it.
In the 2 years I had it I don't think there was a single week when it wasn't back at the dealers. Almost every component failed at some point, some twice, and to top it off the paint fell off. I ended up trading it in at a big loss when it started freezing all the electrics every 5 miles, which would cause it to stall. Switch the ignition off and back on again and it was fine .
Complete back of sh1te! I will NEVER buy another Vauxhall.

Talbot Solara?? My Dad's first ever new car. He thought it was extremely fuel efficient until it ran out of fuel near Basildon
Fuel pump quickly repaired in first week of owning.......

Worst cars i've had the misfortune to experience are the Mini Metro, the Volvo 345 and the Volvo 460. All owned by my dad.... I'm starting to understand why he disapproves of me spending loads of money on cars

SEAT Marbella. It was a cheap version of the FIAT Panda and was actually less refined than it's FIAT counterpart.
There are those that said it couldn't be done, but those plucky Spaniards proved them wrong by swapping the solid, coil-sprung rear axle for a solid, cart-sprung rear axle

Agree with most of these
Can't agree with the 205GTi 1.6 though - stunning car. Best handling FWD car I've ever driven. I guess it always depends on whether you get a lemon or not, but I did 30K faultless miles in mine. OK, French build quality not the greatest, but it was a damn fine little car and quick too. I wouldn't want one with 60K+ miles on it though - I heard some very nasty stories...
Chris
Add to the list of bad cars:
Toyota Starlet - my sister's first car - pile of junk
Any Lada
Any (pre VW) Skoda
Morris Marina
