DVD advice-PS2 or stand alone system
#1
Also the official Sony PS2/DVD remote control is released next friday - looks far better than all the third party ones around at the moment. Plus you get a CD to upgrade your DVD driver to give extra features...

Opinions and advice needed......
I am seriously thinking of purchasing a reasonable DVD for my bedroom. I would also like a decent games system.... me thinks that the PS2 is the ideal all in one solution.
However is the PS2 a good DVD player or only really good for games.
My budget is approx £200-£250 for a stand alone DVD player.
Suggestions please....
Thanks
Jay

You wont go wrong with the PS2. I have bought this for exactly the same reasons you are thinking. I wanted a DVD player and a games machine for my temporary home in Norway.
I have a proper DVD player at home, and the PS2 does all the things it does albeit without the surround sound. You can buy a surround sound kit though, and dont forget the infra red remote control.
Go for it and get GT3 as well!!!

I used a PS2 the other day through my projector and it was just as good as my "proper" DVD player. Only downside is the extra cost for the remote for the PS2 and you can only play region 2 DVDs thru the PS2. So no cheap American imports for you....... (

You can now buy an add-on for PS2 called 'RegionX' this allows it to play DVDs from any region. It is a cartridge that plugs in the back plus a CD that you place in the PS2. After booting up you select the region you want, remove the CD and replace with your DVD..hey presto, multiregion. It also removes macrovision so the green tint is also removed. As it is an external plug-in there are no warrantee issues. I think these retail for between £25 -£35.

the region x thing is great - It works!!!!!
I have one and it costs £19.99. The cartridge slots in either of the memory card ports, and my advice is get a PS2, and a region x and enjoy

Read the morning paper on the tube this morning. The article mentioned that the X box and the Game Cube thingy are coming out next spring......are they worth waiting for??
How many of you PS2 owners would be tempted to make a swap??

There's a company called Techtronics, who claim to have a multi-region version of the PS2 that can play DVDs through the RGB output, which the standard model doesn't. Should improve the picture quality.
Disclaimer: no connection with the firm, and haven't got a PS2 at all. Just thought it might be interesting. I haven't actually seen the product and I've no idea whether it actually works or not.
Andy.

Try getting a Sony S-VHS cable £19.99, If u have an S-VHS socket on your TV or even a S-VHS video this is a must have cable, 1: it improves the graphics of the games about 20% 2: it improves the clarity of the DVD by about 30-40% depending on your TV, being a flash b@stard and having a 36 inch flatscreen i really noticed the difference, my mate with a smaller Tv noticed it but not as much.
also i'd grab your region X ASAP as Sony are trying to ban it!! because it is required for all PS2's which have been chipped up (naughty naughty) but how many of u chipped up your PS1's for those cheap games??, so Region X is a must whatever you want to do with it, havent got mine yet but thanks to this thread i know where to get it cheers!!
