RE: how many martial artists are there on Scoobynet?

A few of the posts today got me wondering how many out there practice a martial art and if so which one?
Oh I do and its a not very well known Russian martial art called Systema.

used to do Fu Jow Pai (a pretty obscure form of Kung Fu) and some Tae Kwon Do.
Would like to take up something again so if by any chance someone can recommend a decent club in the classy metropolis of Slough I would be interested.

I used to practice Ju-jitsu,but found it unhelpful when required for use.
So now I just use the bag alot,as this has been the best way to practice for the enevitable......

Yup I am..
What??? I find grapplig against an opponent to be much more effecient than striking. You've seen my old thread haven't you so I guess its also "street proven"..

Depends how good u are. Jui-Jitsu is well reknowned as being the most effective martial art for self defence. Especially for smaller people.

Well I'm only 5'7" so it works out just beautifully for me. Ironicly I started out as a striker and only found out that I'm a natural grappler a few years back.

You should Emma. Its worth it in a sense that you get to retain your flexibility and general fitness meaning if you ever have a fall or any other accidents, your body is more "hardened" and you won't be injured for long. Hell you can even sometimes avoid being killed in some accidents too.

Did American Kenpo for several years, used it once when i got jumped outside a nightclub, blinded the guy in one eye in the process, paid several thousand for compensation.
Now stick to general fitness.

I've taken up Kuk Sool which is I believe is something like 30 Korean martial arts rolled into one. The stuff that the black belts can do is pretty scary and they are saps in the scheme of things. It involves strikes and techniques and the guy that teaches us goes through everything. Since starting recently we've done various kicks, blocks, pressure points, hair pulling techniques, grappling techniques, chokes, head locks, leg locks, wrist locks, rape escape techniques (not massively relevant for myself but very good for the lasses in the class), etc, etc. I believe it takes 4 years minimum to achieve black belt but at this stage you should be able to fight effectively on your feet and on the ground or better yet just look hard enough to avoid a fight in the first place

My advice to anyone starting in martial arts would be to find a friendly class with a good tutor. The actually martial art is IMO less important. For example just as we argue about EVO's V's Cossies V's Scooby's we can argue Karati V Kung Fu V Kuk Sool and so on. However, cossies, scoobys and evo's are all there or there abouts the same. What seperates them is the mods and the drivers. In other words you could be a black belt at karati and still get 7 shades of **** beaten out of you by a red belt kuk sool guy if he's fitter, faster, more flexible, more committed, got less fear, more confident, etc, etc and the reverse is true.
Also, you'd never think of taking you car for a tune up to a cr@p garage so make sure you're being taught by someone that's good at teaching and takes an interest in your learning. Remember, its all for fun and you can't learn to deal with every situation. Yer fecked if someone pulls a gun on you
