Question

What is it with this word?

I know a lot of words regularly cause difficulty on here, but why lose and loose?

TK, you're excused!

And the other contenders are;

to/too

their/they're/there

your/you're

separate

brake/break

And yes, i *know* this isn't a grammar bbs, and that yes, understanding the message is more important than the spelling, but not being able to spell a basic word like "lose" surprises me...

Another one that bugs me is it's/its.

I know it's an exception to the usual rules regarding apostrophes, but it's really not that difficult.

"It's" is a shortened form of "it is". "Its" denotes something belonging to it. No apostrophe is used to indicate possession in this case.

<slaps self on wrist>

That's the one I get wrong most commonly, I have to admit.

Just force of habit putting the apostrophe between it and the s.

What annoys me is not so much the spelling(mind you the wordws aren't exactly long ones) or grammar (I appreciate that some people just aren't good at it - get lessons btw if that applies to you ), it's using the WRONG word. This isn't a little error such as pressing the wrong key when typing, it's not knowing what words are what.

Using Brake insted of Break isn't a spelling mistake, it's using the WRONG word. As is There/They're/Their.

What were they doing in english classes at school? (were they even AT school).

Maybe we should have a thread with the descriptions of words/spelling/grammer etc.

Can we not forget those most irritating of habits? That of "text-speak" and "baby-talk" typing.

WHY?? (Or should that be "Y?" )

Chose/choose is another one along the same lines as lose/loose.

I make the its/it's mistake sometimes too, but I always give myself a thorough kicking for it.

Add disc/disk to the list

Disc is a round flat thing (usually on here it refers to brakes )
Disk is a storage medium found in a computer.

Unless you're American, in which case ' disk' is the only spelling

Carl - SdB is technically correct as he is referring to moderator initiation rituals

Instead of 'of'

Brake pads - 3 of
NOT
Brake pads - 3 off

Please tell me it's not me that's been wrong all this time

No, no Damian, that should indeed be "of" instead of "off".

But i was perplexed as to why you'd used the number 3 - a curious number to use in conjunction with brake pads i'd have thought!

Just me thinking about it too deeply...
