Dunno' about in UK, but here in CH you can buy a CD-ROM with a database and client front end based on the PTT's white & yellow pages.
This allows reverse searches...even part numbers
These are mostly used by large corporations (to reduce directory enquiries costs) - I'd be surpised if they don't exist in the UK. CH product is called Twixtel (

steve,
don't see how looking up a phone number to get someones address is illeagal. the information is published in phone books that are posted through your front door - all you are wanting to do is sort by phone number not by name! the product is available at:

You'd have to be mad as a frog to go through a phone book and try and find a number you'd found to try and find someones address, that's the deterrent But yeah, I guess it could be used that way if you were that way lobotomised. I'm ex-directory and my number shouldn't be available anywhere though, if it's on 192.com I might have to have words!
Cheers,
Steve.

The closest you can get without getting into the data base is to trace it by area code, then area... the rest will be hard work unfortunately
Your phone book should have a list of area codes in, ie 01925= warrington then it may have another part of the code 321 which is the area in warrington from there its harder as you have up to 9999 numbers which to go through and alot of names
I dont know of any software that does this, not sure if you can do it with 192.com?

Dave,
192 (the company) used to sell CD's that allowed reverse lookups on phone numbers, but i think that HMG stopped the sale a couple of years ago. UK Info Disk 4.1 was, i believe, the last version that allowed address from phone lookup - but unfortunately my copy don't werk at the moment!!!!

Mr Cotton,
I'm also ex directory and would also be miffed if someone had goty my number in this way.
Does it annoy you the way BT cold call like they do..... I tell them I'm ex directory and to leave me alone. My wife is more blunt and tells the to P155 off.

What's more annoying is the amount of SMS spam I get from BT Cellnet, and yesterday, from Carphone Warehouse. A quick call to CW got my name removed from their list (I certainly didn't give them permission to "contact" me this way, so what is it being done in the first place?), but to prevent BT from spamming me took 4-5 phone calls and many increasingly aggressive emails. It's like talking to a brick wall.

I was ex-directory and found my full name address and phone number displayed on Scoot and another site that I can't remember . I have since moved and not suprisingly do not have a land line. I have a mobile and a work phone number and I access the Internet at work on a very fast connection (so couldn't cope with modem speeds anymore). I don't see the point in a landline these days. Especially when ex-directory doesn't work. I also don't get phoned by sales people. Sales people don't even have phone books, they just start at say 01234 123 000 and work upwards.
Apparently BT used to allow reverse searching on the CD they sell with all the UK numbers on it. Then they realised it could be misused and now the software won't allow it.
