Question

Evening all,

I don't claim to be an expert, far from it, but I do drink a lot of "good" red and white wine. I am looking for a recommendation for a well recognised brand of wine glasses. One for red Shiraz/Cabernet bog bold reds and the other for chardonnay type whites.

Any help appreciated!

I like my wine glasses to be "robust", i.e. you can knock them over when you have had a few.

Habitat did some nice ones which were are good to look at, sit well in the hand and very tough. Sorry, don't know the name of them or even if they still stock them. Might be worth a browse though.

Cheers

Ian

Proper wine glasses are lead crystal and they are not robust unfortunately. For robust go with arcroc or plastic . Villery & Bosh do reasonably priced crystal glasses. Dartington are a bit more expensive and more delicate (I broke 2 champagne flutes whilst drying them last w/end; bloody £15 a time). Then if you want to get really carried away you can check out riedel http://www.riedelcrystal.com, particularly the sommelier range.

Charlie.

I'm a Bordeaux drinker, so it's Dartington's budget range at £12 for 4 for everyday use, these hold around .5 litre; and Riedel Sommelier for posh days (1 bottle capacity ), but around £90 a pair

I just put the box on a high shelf and stand underneath when I press the button. Once you've finished you can inflate the bag with air and use it as a floatation device.

http://www.bibendum-wine.co.uk
Bibendum are listed as a dealer for Riedel crystal, they are a very good company to deal with direct.

Hmmm, the Riedel sommeliers - very nice. Got a set of them and, as you say, you can fit the whole damn bottle in there if you so choose (not much room to breathe though).

Riedels break so easily, but are regarded as the best. Not sure why, since they are made in AUstria, but hey LOL

Question

Am i a cheapskate for using Nachtmann for everyday use?

I'd hardly call them "robust", but it saves breaking the Thomas Webbs...

Edited for davyboy's pleasure.

I don't mind buying expensive wine, but TBH I'm always smashing glasses (usually when they're empty, luckily)

I've got 4 red wine glasses that are used for 'everyday' use, hold half a bottle!!!!! saves topping up LOL

Otherwise its Edinburgh crystal for the dinner table, red or white

Dartington are very nice glasses - I don't like cut crystal so they're just the job.

The thinner and more delicate the glass, the better you can enjoy the wine - unless you drink it out of a box like Chuck

Just like tea from a fine rimmed china cup....

Up to a point it makes no difference what you use, but once you start drinking better quality stuff then what you drink it from makes an increasing difference.

The extreme example is the polystyrene cup - I've had champagne served in one before now (we had nothing else in the office) but it's kind of pointless - might as well have been cider (do they still make Pomagne ?)

As with most things, you quickly reach a point of diminishing returns - it really depends on how sensitive you are.

I work with a guy who spends literally £100's on a single hi-fi interconnect cable - I think he's crazy, but he can appreciate the difference - they both sound the same to me. However, his ceiling on wine is atound £7 per bottle as he can't tell any difference above that and his classes are an Argos mixed box.

If you truly appreciate wine then invest in decent glasses, otherwise spend your money on something you do appreciate.

I reckon spending 1-2 timnes the cost of a bottle of wine on a glass to drink it from is about right for most people.

Surely the make of the glass doesn't matter. The weight and shape is the important bit. I have loads of different types/makes/shapes but my fav is a heavy based fine lipped cheapie from Debenhams (£5.00)

BTW - Later in the evening I don't usually bother with a glass. Some people say you can take the trendy 'by the neck' beer thing too far
