Vegans/Vegetarians...Please help!
#1
I have to become a vegan, as advised by hospital and dietician. Oh but they are allowing me to eat fish, very kind of them! Body can't seem to handle animal proteins, acidic foods or caffeine very well and this looks to be the reason why I have been ill so long (IE: intollerences and allergies).
So...Any good suggestions for tasty food to eat because I haven't got a clue!

OK, I'm one of those hippy veggie people . There are many good meals you can have without meat. I like Pasta, Veggie Lasagne, Quorn meat substitutes, salads, waffles, chips etc...
If you think you'll miss having meat, then there are plenty healthier substitutes available. ASDA have a pretty good choice, so it'd be worth checking them out
Crush (just off to have a pot noodle for dinner)

My ex-girlfriend suffered from the same condition.
Just check a few websites, as it will offer advice on a balanced diet.
If you get the craving for meat, try tuna steaks or swordfish as they are both very 'meaty'.
Good luck!

Check out www.taste.co.uk - plenty of recipes there, and you can search specifically on vegan diets.
I'd also highly recommend Delia's Vegetarian Collection - not sure how many are vegan, but they're lovely recipes.

My sister has been a strict vegan for about 5years, so she has a lot of experience of this. I can have a word with her about what her diet is made up of, books to read etc if you like.

Excellent! That's all really helpful, thanks! *Bounces* It's also nice to know there's someone else out there with this too.
No Crush I can't have dairy products, but can have dairy substiutes like soya. I am going to try soya milk this weekend, wish me luck...

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it, don't **** them away on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than a efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable slop.
Q: Is beer or wine bad for me?
A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three categories, animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements, so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables.
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.
Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular
exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain - Good
Q: If I stop smoking, will I live longer?
A: Nope. Smoking is a sign of individual expression and peace of mind. If you stop, you'll probably stress yourself to death in record time.
Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?
Q: What's the secret to healthy eating?
A: Thicker gravy.
Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You
should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

More seriously, I can see intolerance to acidic foods or caffeine, but animal proteins?? Humans are omnivorous, so why wouldnt you be? Are they sure you are unable to use / have intolerance to animal protein? How does that go along with eating fish? Sounds strange...

Well it may be a lactose intollerence so i am cutting out dairy for a few weeks to see. The thing is that no one knows exactly what is wrong so it's a case of clutching at straws. We know that when i am on a low fat diet I have less bladder trouble, and thats when i eat little dairy or meat. Eventually we will find out what exactly it is so I can avoid it.
No I don't seem to have a problem with sugar.

Hmm, sounds strange. Did you do a complete blood analysis?
Lactose intolerance is pretty common, I get a weird stomach feeling when I drink too much milk, but I havent heard of anybody being allergic to chicken or beef yet!

Uh uh, our NHS aren't that interested in problems that they don't know what the cause is! Have an appointment with boyfriends homeopathist on Monday, his family swear that homeopathy works and say I should at least give it a try.
Soya milk tastes much better with sugar on cereals.
