Love Me Love My Car
Men in the UK are more likely to spend money on their motors than to lavish luxury on their ladies according to the RAC Foundation.
While Valentine’s Day gives everyone the opportunity to express love for their nearest and dearest - for many of the UK’s 32 million drivers that seems to mean the four wheeled occupant of the garage.
Twice as many guys said that they would sooner buy a luxury item for their car than their partner. When asked what they would buy if they had funds for only one expensive purchase, 18 per cent said that they would splash out on a new sound system, alloys or other car accessories while only seven per cent said that they would treat their "significant other."
Forty five per cent of UK motorists also admitted to naming their car, 80 per cent of drivers admitted to talking to their car and a massive 78 per cent said that they loved their vehicle.
Last year, UK motorists bought 2.5 million new cars - making us the biggest new car market in Europe after Germany and meaning that new car ownership per capita has overtaken our German cousins.
And while the French are traditionally reckoned to be the "lurve" gods of Europe, the Brits obviously have an enduring affair of a different kind. As cars are such precious partners, the RAC Foundation has compiled a dossier of Valentine valedictions involving vehicles:
The most romantic Valentine’s gestures include:
Hearts and flowers In the late 1930’s movie star Carole Lombard gave Clark Gable a Model T Ford emblazoned with hearts as a Valentine’s love token. It had a note pinned to the steering wheel: "You’re driving me crazy".
On a plate Barnsley man James Grand bought girlfriend Louise Taylor the registration X4 LOV (kiss for love) for her car. (DVLA have lots of other romantic registrations to offer on www.dvla-som.co.uk or telesales hotline: 0870 6000 142.)
The car as romantic venue:
Love machine The car is the second most popular place for lovemaking (after the bedroom).
Escort agency More people claim to have "done it" in a Ford Escort or Cortina than any other car.
The stuff of dreams:
Babe magnet In true fantasy style, experts polled by Autocar magazine recently voted the Jaguar E Type followed by Lamborghini Miura and the Ferrari 250 GT SWB the sexiest cars ever. According to Foundation research, the car that most men aspire to as a "babe-magnet" is a BMW X5 while women covet the Toyota MR2.
Any colour as long as it’s red Red is the second best selling colour after blue and still the most popular choice for sexy, sports cars. It is representative of passion, excitement and thrills.
Come inside Sexiest car interiors, according to market research, are reckoned to be classic leather, followed by suede and velvet. Animal prints were a definite turn off Tiger.
Valentine’s goodies:
Champagne taste. What about the ultimate car gifts? A Bentley Azure Final Series will set you back a cool quarter of a million pounds or a Ferrari Enzo V12 at £425,000?
Beer pocket? Alternatively you could have 85 Perodua Kelisa EX’s (at £4995 the cheapest new car on offer in the UK) for the same price as the Ferrari.
Valentine’s Day dates:
Perfect day. When quizzed about the perfect date, many people cited cars as featuring heavily in their ideal - being picked up in a limo for a dinner date, a long drive in the country or a picnic in a vintage vehicle.
Moving pictures. Romantic movies are also a favourite choice of date. The most memorable romantic movies featuring cars included Titanic (the love scene in the car) or The Graduate (Hoffman’s Alfa Spyder seems to have left an impression).
Wheels and reels. Guys nominated the sexy car chases in Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds, The French Connection and The Italian Job.
If music be the food of love…. favourite choices of music to romance to include:
Cruising and schmoozing. From Steppenwolf’s high speed classic "Born to be Wild" and Kraftwerk’s "Autobahn" to the more gently paced "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman - opinion differed as to what constituted the ideal music for love. Other choices included: Gary Numan’s "Cars", Janis Joplin’s "Mercedes Benz" to the Beatles "Baby You can Drive My Car".
And finally - the greatest act of car love:
Mustang marriage - Many men have had love affairs with their cars but 28-year-old Buster Mitchell of Knoxville, Tennessee wanted to make it official. Jilted by his girlfriend, a bereft Mitchell last year decided he wanted to marry his true love – a 1999 Mustang GT. Unsportingly, officials vetoed the match.
Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation said:
" We are still firmly wedded to our cars. A century after the affair between the UK's motorists and their cars began, the flames of passion are burning more brightly than ever and the romance continues to blossom and grow - except the flirtation is now just as likely to involve a female driver and her vehicle, dispelling sexist myths about men and motors.
"Motorists are more dependent on their cars than ever before - with 89 per cent* saying it would be difficult to adjust their lifestyle to being without out the car. For most it is more than a love affair with the car, it is a life saving dependency."
Conrad King, the RAC’s consultant psychologist added:
"Cars incite passion, and owning and driving cars incites passionate behaviour. In itself, this isn't indicative of any psychological problem, but if an individual’s passion for their car means that other relationships in their lives are suffering, they might need to seek out help. Either that or just get out more"
"Many men might quote the old joke: "Why do men prefer cars to women? Because they don't need to buy them flowers to turn them on". For some, that’s sad but true".

Sorry mate but and I quote here:-
"The RAC Foundation for Motoring is an independent body established to protect and promote the interests of UK motorists. Motoring organisation RAC supports its six million customers with breakdown cover and a wide range of other motoring solutions. The views of each organisation should not be attributed to the other."
The RAC Foundation is nothing to do with that other bunch of .........
