How much sleep do you need?
#1
From recent experience of staying up all morning till 5am watching the cricket, then getting up at 6 has taught me that i cannot live on 1 hour of sleep. I reckon i can get by on 5-6hours without too much trouble...
Anyone else?

I've got a fairly accurate way of knowing that I've not had enough sleep. I spew When I get very tired if I don't sleep eventually my body just makes me throw up. After that I'm pretty much useless and just shut down!!

I need 8 hours min. I find it a real drag cos I would like to have more time to do stuff, but if I don't get my 8 hours i am often in danger of falling asleep on the drive home. i have always started work early (6.30 am) and when I was a bit younger I would go out during the week but I was constantly falling asleep in pubs, clubs, busses, tubes, taxis etc. i have tried training myself to get by on 5-6 hours but it just ends up wrecking me.

Having the ability to get by on less than two hours of sleep is such a gift. You could just get so much more done. I think most geniuses don't need much if any sleep.....

7 or 8 - I think a lot of it is down to what your body expects. There are some funky sleep techniques where you take a power nap every 6 hours or so - which is meant to work quite well. Awkward to kip at midday though.

TheScooby - And I'm proud of it!
They say maggie could get by on 4 hours
the average is 7/8 hours
so SOMEONE needs to be at 11 to address the balance and that'd be me!

I only need about 6 hours a night. This is probably because within 0.001 seconds of my head hitting the pilow, I lapse into a deep coma. I'm also pretty good at getting up in the morning. I find it difficult to sleep for more than 8 hours unless I've had a shed load of booze the night before.
I have in the past, whilst on military courses or exercises, made do with as little as 2 hours a day for a week or more. I once made do with 20 minutes sleep between waking up on Friday morning until Sunday night.

Recent studies showed that people lived longer if they only had 7 hours sleep, as opposed to 8 hours, which was thought to be the optimum length of sleep.
I always aim for 7 if poss, but often get about 6

Dream Weaver - 7 Hours optimal ay? That's interesting, i suppose you can't really measure yourself on that because it depends on the person, but good to know.....

Similar to Jerome, as soon as my head hits that pillow I'm snooring like a good 'un.
Find that I generally get around 5 to 6 hours sleep, often working between 23:00 and 01:00 (system upgrades), then get up around 6am to go to work.
I can do this for a couple of weeks then I get VERY sloth like. When on-call (1 week in 4) sleep is a precious thing
Then its back to working regular hours 7.30 ~ 5pm and planned work in the evening. Done this for a couple of years now and its certainly getting a little tiring now.

I personally go for 8hrs, but I've noticed that I can still feel like cr@p even with 8hrs if I go to bed late. If I get to bed at say 10:30 and get up around 06:30 then I feel good. If I don't get my head down till 01:00, but get up at 09:00 I feel like cr@p all day.
I've also slept for 12hrs+ and really felt like ****. Too much sleeps is just as bad as not enough
When I was training in the Marines we did sentry duties at night. From 20:00 to 06:00, you'd sometimes 2hrs on, 2hrs off all through the night. If there was more of you, you'd get 1hr on, 3hrs off but that was rare. Funny thing was I never ever felt sleepy during the day.

I'm another one than once my light is out and I achieve head / pillow interaction , I'm off in the land of nod.
I can sleep through most things too - once had a load of kids fighting outside our house in the middle of night and I didn't hear a thing.
Generally need around 7 hours.

I get around 6 a night but at the weekend, surprise surprise it all goes out the window.
My record is 37 hours without sleep.
Full days work, all night rave, full days work on saturday, then went to bed.
I was having SERIOUS sense of humour failure by the end of it it,but that just made me appreciate my bed all the more
