Excuse me for thinking this is a nanny-state policy, but what blind bit of difference will banning tobacco advertising as of midnight tonight have on the smoking habits of the UK population?

I don't think it will make a blind bit of difference.
You need to stop people smoking in the first place - this means targetting kids. Taking someone who is dying from lung cancer round a few schools might make a difference. Raising the age limit to be able to buy them to 18 might make a difference. Making kids think it is uncool to smoke somehow might make a difference. Banning advertising will not make any difference.

Well I smoke rollies which I get from abroad, so no worries to me.
People should be free to choose what they want. Wonder if the UK will have tough regimes in 30 years time, like they do in the East?

Tiggs, i agree intra-brands that advertising is worthwhile, but is this really going to have an effect on the overall number of people smoking now?
Won't advertising in the smoking fraternity now just be done by word of mouth?
I mean, so people really start smoking as a result of adverts?

They'll stop selling them soon except in back street dens......
P.s. if everyone gave up smoking and drinking tomorrow, this country would be in a right state!

Tobacco advertising does work (unfortunately)
Nobody should underestimate the power of the subconscious and you would be amazed at the product loyalty that can be created through clever advertising that your rational mind doesn't even notice.
If anyone has any doubt about this you should read the relevant bit of Allen Carr's book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking".
IMHO he's hit the nail on the head re all aspects of smoking...

Brand loyalty is one thing which may be lost - erm, not sure, but people will still smoke. We see adverts for **** everywhere, usually in the mouth or hands..........

Alcohol and cigarettes are two different things IMO. Anyone can drink around me and I can choose to abstain. However, if someone chooses to smoke around me, my only option, if I don't want to be fumigated, is to go elsewhere. I almost never go to pubs because of this. I believe that smokers who smoke around non-smokers and children should be charged with assault.

The Government's stated objective for banning these adverts is to reduce smoking by 2.5%. Maybe secretly, they would like/hope to see it drop more than that. Based on the trend over the past three decades maybe it will, with or without the ad ban IMHO.

TurboKitty - "charged with assault!"
Bit harsh - what they should do is make proper smoking areas in pub/restuarants - ie a different room to the non-smokers.
It would be better for both parties, especially the smokers cos you non-smokers are miserable bunch!

Ya don't see too many adverts for ecstacy or heroin do you?
It doesn't seem to stop people taking them though!
Although i hate smoking, and have never smoked, i feel that it is blatant social engineering to ban cigarette advertising. What next, banning adverts for sharp knives, pointed sticks, pomegranates!!!

You got it in a nut shell. I am sick of smelling of **** at the end of a night. Smoking should be like in America.......... 1/2 banned.
Lets be fair, the only reason most started is brcause they wanted to be a lad with the boys or girls... Muppets.
