you lie on your back, place it on your chest, and bang it with a big stone - like a sea otter

The best place for an oyster knife is a posh department store (John Lewis, House of Frazer etc.).

Even then, they can be buggers to open!!!!

Now a battery powered oyster opening gadget - that would be a clever invention

you dont need to bother with opening them to appreciate oysters.

go down to the local high street and find a vagrant-preferably a heavy smoker. give an empty Mr kiplings pie tin and ask him politely to expongiate ( gob/hoik ) the biggest docker's omlette he can into said tray.

add plenty of salt.

tip back head and suck "oyster" in.

enjoy.

tried them myself once, disgusting.

Oysters = sea flavoured snot!
I used to work at an oyster farm, it's not the oyster that kills you, but the nasty bacteria/viruses that live in it. The old saying is only eat them with an R in the month, this is sound advice as the oysters spawn in summer so they're full of oyster sperm and lots of bacteria. I guess that irish/scottish ones are best as they live in the coldest & cleanest waters. Freshness is also very important.

Thanks Toerag...

So to get that authentic Oyster feel, you actually have to get the tramp to do something else.

Delightful.

Keep them in your fridge covered with a damp cloth but do not allow them to freeze. The ideal temperature for storage is between 5° and 8° celsius. Don't immerse them in water and don't store them in an airtight container.

If any are slightly open, give them a smart tap and check that they close quickly. Any that don't should be discarded.

I was told by a female friend that they taste like the aforementioned love mayonnaise, which worries me because I like them
