Hi all,

I purchased a new DVD RoM drive for my PC cos the old oen would not read DVD. Only the new one doesn't read them either. After reading Samsung site it mentions that it does not need specific drivers but uses Windows 98 drivers.

Could it be possible that teh Windows driver is corrupt and if so how where are they located and how could I copy them from Windows disc to hard drive

Any advice much appreciated

Cheers

Kwack

I thought that it just used the standard CD driver whatever that is.

If you can see it in your system properties, try removing it and reboot, get it to redetect, and if you are lucky it will re-install the drivers.

Other than that, I would suggest looking on microsofts help pages (which are probably pants )

Sorry can't be more help

Just had a look on my machine at work (NT one) and I think the stuff you are after lives in your windowssystem32 directory.

I'm assuming that the CDROM.SYS file is the driver for the CD drive under windows (and not a legacy dos one). You could always search for it on the windows disk, but it may be in one of the .cab files.

Just a little curious - what do you mean it won't read DVD's? I just popped Dune into my DVD player here at work, and it read it - but I can't actually watch the movie without spawning a DVD player, which Win98 doesn't include - it comes with the player itself.

Or do you mean it won't read CD's?

Following on from the last post - If its only DVD you cant read ie. play movies this is down to the decoder. For you to be able to play DVD movies you need either a hardware or software decoder. I had PowerDVD software free with my DVD drive. I would check with the manufacturer which decoder they recommend. The lack of a decoder should not stop you using the drive as CD rom though.

cheers
