its about relevance to the person absorbing the news and their ability to asociate with the ppl in the news.

most US/UK ppl dont know any starving africans, they dont know where the problems are or how they come about...like it or not that means most dont care to spend much time thinking about it.

as for space shuttles....we all know about them (bruce willis flew one), the people on board are people we can asocciate with and the place where the thing crashed is somewhere we may visit or know ppl who have visited.

this is why news differs in different places.

the Reading Evening Post may mention a mugging on a Reading kid that wont be covered in the Newbury Post....cause newbury ppl care about newbury ppl before Reading ppl. and on it goes, all the way to colour, race, geography, class, etc

edit to add that this answer became rather generic, in this case its simple to point out that its a crashing spaceship...therefore big news.

Getting a bit sick of CNN/BBC coverage of shuttle disaster now.....
(nothing else to do while based in Germany on behalf of my company)

Think about it - 7 people died - agree that is not nice. However, 85 people died
on a flight the other week - yet coverage was 5 mins an hour for a day or so.
9 people died on a train in Queensland yesterday....57 people died in
a train crash in India yesterday....no doubt more than 7 people died
on UK roads since yesterday....

I don't remember seeing George W Bush addressing the nation about all
those lives (or any other world Premier).

At the end of the day, all those lives are more important than 7 NASA lives.

NASA people accept the risk as part of the journey. Are they surprised?
Do you think travelling alongside a rocket is going to be 100% risk free??!?!?!
People travelling on a train do no ordinarily expect to die in a crash.
People travelling on the side of a rocket into space, orbiting the earth,
and descending at such high speed in such high heat don't realise
they are taking a risk?? Why is it such a HUGE news event while the other
deaths are not?

Get a grip America......we see plane crashes every other week and don't
bat an eyelid. The shuttle is just a complex glider.

Don't get me wrong - RIP to the crew - but ease off the coverage America!!!!

no you dont, its a space ship not a train. when was the last time a space ship blew up and crashed into the earth?

if the queen got mugged it would make more news than 100 nobodys...thats why the news is the news. if everybody and everything was of equal "newsworthyness" then the papers would be 3ft thick and have billy's hatrick at the wally wanders game alongside beckhams on the back page. the showbiz section would feature mavis and carol from BT's accounts dept. going to see Harry Potter alonside Brad Pitt showing to a premire.

if yo think exploding spaceships are a higher priority of "news" then your mad!

T

ps- note the use of the word NEWS in relation to priority- this isnt a moral point im making, just a newsworthyness one.

15 million plus people are likely to starve to death in Africa this year but these don't seem to really matter in the Messrs Bush/Blair save the world philosophy. Don't get me started...... DL

Imlach

The thing with the space shuttle is not what it is (“a complex glider”) but what it represents,

It represents the absolute pinnacle of human endeavor (at the moment), so this is the reason it’s failure genuinely more important to the world than the other events you mentioned.

Space exploration gives you the scientific and technological advances of a war without killing people, which must be a good thing

45 people just died in a train smash in Zimbabwe.

Probably black Africans, so probably not newsworthy.

- agree with your take Imlach.

Sorry about the Shuttle disaster, but endless coverage ...... ?

And as for george dubya's elegy, he's well set on seeing off a few thousand of his countrymen and Iraquis .... seems a bit hypocritical.

So whats your opinion wtc coverage???

Its a massive event tbh, might not effect your life so dont put sky news or cnn on problem solved.. But the knock-on effects might be devistating.

If humans want to survive leaving the planet is the next evolutionary step. This is going to be a massive step back now. ISS will be hanging in the balance as russia isn't to hot either.

If it happens in America it's big news.

If it was a a Russian space shuttle, it just would not have got the column inch's.

Every where else in the world has bomb's going off, but when there was a bomb in Atlanta you never heard the end of it.

The shuttle represented the best of human, not only Americans but Israeli and dare I say it and get the wrath of Popeye P1, Indian (yes the race that is considered to be less by him and his cronies). The space program is the only thing that keeps my faith in humanity. Its a tragedy thats about a million times bigger than 9/11..

This thread makes me sick.

I agree with KAT, this thread makes me sick as well.
Okay when you come down to it "only" 7 people died but ffs they are astronauts.
These people have to be the bravest people on the planet. Would you have the b0llocks to step aboard a 20year old rust bucket (a common opinion to some at NASA) with a fooking great liquid fuel tank strapped to it and side by side with what effectivly are a pair of very large fireworks and then set fire to the lot whist everyone else retires to a three mile distance? I know I wouldnt. I doubt anyone who are doing them down would either.
These people are amazingly brave, doing a job which at the back of their mind, know is incredibly risky but they still do it anyway.
Stop doing them down. Its not right.

Katana - you do speak utter tripe.

7 astronauts vs 3000 civilians???????????????????????????????

You get your maths GCSE???

In the greater scheme of things the 9/11 incident has far more devestating and far reaching consequences for mankind.

Planet Earth to katana...perhaps you should sign up for space exploration?

Shrek go screw your mother you inbred c*nt. I know so a p*ki and a k*ke died so big deal eh? Yeah thought so and at least I can do some math, dare I ask if you even know how to use a times table?

9/11 were just some businessman intent on making money dying driven by greed. The shuttle represented the best of humanity working together for the benifit of mankind..

Katana you are a truly pathetic individual.

I dont speak ill of the dead like you.

You trivialise the 9/11 with your comment 'Its a tragedy thats about a million times bigger than 9/11..'

3000 dead hello - white, black, asian, chinese etc etc.

Dont throw your stupid race card into the debate with your p*ki and black comments. You are pathetic!

Well I thought that your single inbred brain cell could not understand the significance of this disaster. Life revolves around more than your **** Front march. The shuttle as i said represented the best of humanity, something that i doubt you or any member of your genepool (well its small ain't it?) could not hope to achieve.

The pathetic one is you who are not enlightened enough to understand. Why not just go out of the safety of the internet and spew the same kind of sh*te out in public.

'9/11 were just some businessman intent on making money dying driven by greed'

so were the countless babies and young children who died as a result intent on making money.

Stop preaching this offensive rubbish you moron.

If you hate the west so much then move to Iraq and see how far you get with your philosophies!

Hmm did I say they deserved it? No.

But tell me in the grander scale of things which is more tragic? You won't understand it because your single celled Amoeba brain is probably straining already trying to type the letter A.

Deep down inside, you're probably smilling, humming to "Its getting hot in here" by nelly satisfied with the fact that a Jew and an Indian is dying as the shuttle burns up in re-entry..

''9/11 were just some businessman intent on making money dying driven by greed'

Hang on a minute Katana. WTF is this statement i have highlighted???? You must suffer from memory loss from what you have just typed. Quote 'just some businessmen intent on making money' and that is not trivialising their deaths?????? Do you make money? Do i make money????

You are truly deranged inside your small brain and are truly sick thinking of this sh*t you type.

next you will be saying that 8 million jews deserved it in the holocaust!

They are ALL people, every single individual has something to offer during their life, ok i know some people in this world rather take than offer, but they are all people. They are all worth the same. their achivements is what differs. Ok, i know they were top of the range, but that makes them no different than the rest of us. its better to see them as people. Those lives were lost in the search for their dreams. 9/11 lives were because of some maniac's dream. some people will die in the next months from starvation, illnesses, US bombs, maybe(and i wish no) from Iraqi attacks. i'm not saying that someone from you guys is wrong, and i don't want to seem politically correct but every has his slice of being right and being wrong, we shouldn't look who is more valuable, but who is alive and who is dead. we are live, and istead of saying 7 people are more valuable than 3000 and vice versa, we should feel bad for this tragic accident and wish never to happen again
PS. i am not attacking anyone, i just think we should think why this happened, not how much were these people worth. they are no gold chains, or necklaces or cars, they are people. people like you and me. And as regarding the coverage, channels don't have the same amount of news every day to show to the people. if everything else was boring, its normal to show us this. The guy who arranges the air-time of each story, doesn't think as a human when he is doing it(no offence to the guy but this is his job, right?), he wants to have people glued to the TV.
