They are great buy one.
It was a little bit of hassle setting up and upgrading the software but now it runs it's self. Lovely bit of kit very easy to use.
I like it.

If you have a powerful PC, then you can have all the features of TIVO and more for next to nothing.

Have a look at

Talking

I've had my Tivo for a couple of months, and it's failed to change channel on my digibox a few times which has peeved me mightily. However, I watch everything as lie tv and love being able to watch instant replays of racing incidents, and the abilty to jump from recording to recording and delete things instantly. The "season Pass" to record all episodes of a series can go a bit OTT, but all in,I love mine.
As for showshifter, I've downloaded the software, but it has no control of digiboxes, or remote control without experimenting with 3rd party hardware. If you just want to tape stuff terrestrial broadcasts, it may be fine if used with Digiguide.
It is probably worth trying

I really like the look of this, but was put off by the monthly cost.

Apparently you can now pay a 1 off fee for life (the life of the box)

Exclamation

I've been wondering about these, my main objections being that the box seems unnecessarily large, and that I'd rather wait until more mainstream companies start producing this sort of thing - rather than pay a lifetime subscription to Tivo then see them go bust.

If I were Tivo, I'd patent as much as possible, and license it to OEM manufactureres so they get something like the VHS standard going, then you could buy one from, say, Sony, knowing that they'll still be there next week.

Just thoughts,

Simon.

Simon,
Tivo just provide the operating system and programme information. This is licenced by thye manufacturers, including Sony I believe. It doesn't appear that way at the moment as only Thomson are currently producing boxes for use in the UK.

Robski,
correct, there is a one off fee, but it's 200 quid, and 600 is a lot to pay out in one go but it is for the box, not the customer, so wherever the box goes, so does the subscription .

Thanks for all the input guys. I've been to the Tivo forum and am pretty much sold on it now.

I'll let you know how I get on - hope the Mrs likes her Bday present!
