Question

I am an Electronics n00b but want to create the circuit shown here, which adds RS232 to a BT caller ID unit.

I have the farnell order codes for the Optocoupler (326770) and RS232 transciever (3025020).

Its also been suggested I use a diode and voltage regulator (412430) to power it from the PC com port - as below.

....DTR (approx5V)
.....I
...Diode
.....I
...Voltage Reg ----- Grnd
.....I
..Supply (5V)

What I'm struggling to do is understand all the specs to order suitable diode (x1) and capacitors (x5). Any electronics gurus care to recommnend some suitable farnell order codes ?

Thanks

Deano

Thumbs up

I suspect any old diode would do, just find a popular one thats within the voltages on the PC (i.e. 12v), its probably a polarity protection device anyway...
The Capacitors are exactly as listed...
1uF = 1Micro Farad, which should be listed in the catalogue.
Does that answer your question or have I missed something ?
cheers
Dan

Edited cos I misread the question and I will check my catalogue for specifics tomorrow

Yep the diode is purely for a little protection for the PC Com port I believe.

The web is sh*te for some things - one of which is quickly scanning for suitable bits at places like farnell and RS. With a paper catalogue you can scan literally hundreds of things and quickly home in on the right one. Farnell site makes this soooo painful.

Any pointers appreciated

I only have a CPC catalogue, and I suspect an ideal capacitor is:
Panasonic NHE Series 105 (general purpose electrolytic)
50v 1uf .11p each

As for a diode, well you could rob one out of an old radio/tv/mains transformer as averything has one in for the voltage regulators, I have 4 here pulled out of a mains adaptor marked 1N4001.

Edited to say I have just found bags of 1uf capacitors in the workshop, would you like me to post them and the diodes to you, drop me an email if you do....
