Okay....its not me,i'm asking on behalf of someone on another forum. Here is a copy of her post.I'm asking here because i know there's a few people in the business.
Thanks in advance.
Paul...
"I've just enrolled on a 20 hour basic HTML and Frontpage course to start with (£25 reasonable - I thought) I can then go onto do Levels 2 and 3, then onto Dreamweaver, I would also like to learn JAVA.
I am trained as a bilingual secretary and have years of experience with producing high graphic presentations but I want to do more.
I was thinking of seeing if I can work from home and would like to become a web designer - any advice please."
Thanks in advance.

First thing once she knows what she is doing is to do her own web site, and then do some for friends / family so there are examples of her work, and if they are good enough they will attract other peoples attention and provide a portfolio of her work for people to see.

If she really wants to go into it (there seem to be more webdesigners than websites atm...) then dont bother with Java, go for PHP or ASP. As what's been said before, you need a strong portfolio to show people, so working on little sites for friends is a good way to start, it may even be an idea to approach small businesses and offer them a free website. DW has done very well to get where he is, he has real talent and started well by having a good site for his company, and also a good portfolio.
