I was wondering if anyone had any comments as to weather this was a good deal?

I know that buying a new car is not always the right thing to do but I really need a car with free insurance as I am only 21 with 0 no-claims bonus!

The price of a brand new VTR is usually £9995 and I can get it for £8895 so I am saving about £1100 plus the saving of insurance.

Not a bad idea but had you thought about a second hand impreza sport?? Good handling just a little lacking in the speed department but still great fun to drive. I'd imagine earlier cars are about the same money by now.

when I was 21 I bought a Punto GT, I had zero no claims, and 1 claim against me.

no problems on the insurance front and it was a group 14 car.

new car, in 2 years it will be worth circa 4.5-5k. I reckon you'd be better off buying a used one about a year or so old as they cost about 7k. That leaves £1800 towards insurance, it's only a group 7 car.

The thing is, saxo's brand new are about £10,000 I think so I was thinking that the depreciation may be eaten up buy the discount and insurance? I don't really know what to do!

The insurnance (without shopping around) is worth about £1000

So are there any other cars which may be a better bet? new of second hand?

I got a quote on a VTS (gp14?) and it was about £1700! so I think it will be a while before I insure one of those!

What group is an impreza sport?

A New VTR has a screen price of about 10k, the actual purchase price should be lower. Also, if you can get it with a discount, so can everyone else!!

Euro imports are about 7.5k.

Free insurance or not, buying a new car, you will always lose money.

VTR's have been around for about 4 or 5 years now, personally I'd buy one thats older, no worries about depriciation, a lot of people bought them as they couldn't get the free insurance on the VTS, the momnet the 'free' insurance ended they excahnged cars, look on the autrotrader site it's full of 'em!!

My sport is group 13 insurance £700 23yrs with 4yrs no claims MY00 whith wheels and backbox (insurance for full system - they only have one exhaust catagory). Shop around and find an older sport and you'll pay a lot less than the cost of the saxo - go on get a scooby

I did consider a sport now I am stuck!
My mum got a 5 door sport as a loan car and it was really cool! but it was automatic and I sure how much difference there is?

Oh well it is nice to have the choice!

The VTR is a nice car, if not quick enough. I did what you are looking at and bought one new on my 21st birthday. At the time I paid around £11k for it (I had just got my first job having finished my degree, and worked out I could afford the better part of £450 a month on a car loan (over 1/2 my wages )) I kept it for 26 months, until the Scooby was ready, then sold it for just over £6k, but thanks to the free insurance policy now had 7 years no claims

Points to bare in mind are that parts are not exactly cheap, or made to last, if you get one, must sure you get it undersealed yourself, I did not, assuming the car was treated before it left the factory, when I got rid of it half the underside of the car was at various stages of rusting away. Tyres lasted 7k a set, at £150 a corner for the Michelins (don't bother with Pirelis, they are not very good at all, and 4k to a set) went through a set of discs and pads and a wheel baring, but nothing more, ignoring my encounter with a kerb on snow, ooops.

Robertio - Did you get 1 years free insurance when you brought it? If so what was the renewal like at 22? And who is the policy with?

I think it is what I will get, the speed does not really bother me too much as I am hoping to get a motorbike soon so that will keep me going!!

The VTR came with 2 years free insurance when I got it, std quote at the time was close on £1500

The policy was through Direct Line, and at the end of it assuming no claims during the policy you suddenly jump to full no claims

One problem I forgot to mention: the VTRs now have those ridiculous headlights like the MY01

I agree about the headlights!
It seems like I could get a secondhand one and pay for insurance but the new one is not much more!
I got quotes for about the same so that has to be taken into account against the price + an ok trade in on my car and it is starting to look a good idea!
